Question about 2001 Volkswagen Passat
Getting your key out in that situation is as simple as turning the steering wheel to the left or right until it locks. The key should easily come out at that point. I'm not sure why this "safety feature" is built into Volkswagen cars, but I can tell you they aren't the only one doing it. I know Lexus cars have it as well.

Is the steering wheel in the 'lock' position? The key should come out when it is latched properly.
