1997 dodge grand caravan 3.8 engine - tach, speedometer, heat and fuel gauges all
quit working at the same time. No data to the overhead computer. (external temp does read) Door locks are not locked by computer when in motion. Transmission does shift. Sometimes all gauges, tach, speedometer come up. Service engine light on, as is the antilock brake light. OBE II unit will turn off the Service lights if gauges come up for some reason.

Sometimes a rap to the dash top starts the gauges, tach, and speedometer.

I have the same problem, did anyone find a fix?

  • craftsforme2 Dec 06, 2008

I have a 97 Dodge Caravan. I also lose my temp. speed, fuel and odom. Have no idea what is causing this. Have reconnected the neg. ground under the battery holder, that is screwed right into the van body. Thought this was the problem since it would only go off and on when going over a bump. Which the screw was rusted off. Have changed the cables running to the battery. Seems like everything that I have tried will stop the on and off for awhile, but then just when I think the problem is fixed it does it again. Recently lost my speed indicator, which had nothing to do with the other problems. That was a speed sensor on the trans. Which was an easy fix. Easily screwed right into the trans, under the battery holder. Over all the van is extremely dependable, just really a pain that I can find this electrical problem. Doesn't cause the van to quit or anything just don't know how fast, or how much gas and etc. If anyone has the answer, or something else I can check please let me know.

This is a common problem with Dodge caravans. I'm having the same problem right now. The solution is where the wiring harness plugs into your cluster pack. the solder on the circuit board has broken. there is a fix for it if you have an electrical solder gun you can fix it, if not ya have to either pull one from salvage or order a new circuit board which costs a little over 400.00 bucks.

Wire harness, I have a 97 caravan 3.3 and the whole dash lights will go out. I took off part of the dash and reseated the wire harness plug into the dash. I have heard of a few people with caravans having the same issue.

2003 dodge caravan. Tach and speedometer jumped far right and now aren't working. All else is in lauding other gauges. Fuses aren't the issue

Clusters are a problem in these cars. Go on line and find someone who can rebuild it. Very low cost to rebuild. Tach and speedo get there signals from different sources so it is more than likely a cluster issue not a sensor.

My gauges in the instrument panel are not working: speedometer, tachometer , fuel gauge etc.

If all the guages quit working at the same time, then it is probably a blown fuse. Check your fuse panels in the dash or under the hood. Look for a fuse that is labeled instrument panel or guages, it is probably blown.

Everthing on my dash (speedometer,odometer,fuel

Blown Fuse or fried Circuit board. Take to a local AutoZone, Advance, Murray's, O'reillys or a similar part house for them to check the wiring. I'm assuming the van does not use a mechanical Speedometer or Fuel Gauge.

On the plus side, with no speedometer, your indicated odometer mileage does not increase. Just keep your speed down and your tank full. Kidding, just kidding.

These vehicles seem to have a problematic short, my grandfather has the same vehicle with the same problem, i found the short under the carpet on the driver side of the vehicle, under the gas pedal, sometimes wires can crack and break.

Pontiac Sunfire Dashboard Guages don't Work

Dashboard gauges have a wiring problem. Most Sunfires have these especially late models. It's a common defect. While the gauges will run fine most of the time, the primary instigator is heat. The more the car heats up inside the cabin, the more the gauges will stick. So keep the inside cool, and you'll be fine. Trying to replace with Chevrolet Cobalt gauges. I'll tell you if they work.

1991 Dodge Daytona Speedometer and Odometer not working.

I had the same problem with my 90 daytona. The tach and the speedometer would work intermitantly. I took the whole gauge cluster out, and heated all the soldering with a solder gun to reflow the connections. It seems that this is a common problem with the connections cracking. You may not be able to see the cracks in the solder.

Speedometer and Tachometer

It could have a short behind the dash where you pushed the tripometer. Check all your fuses and you will find one for your gauges thats bad replace if and see if it works, Hope so Take care
