Thanks for your help. I filled the reservoir to the level you recommended and everything is fine now. It was very low but I see no signs of a leak. I will keep an eye on it.

rdyrock , you asked about good brand of power steering and johnnyc85 answered valvoline automatic transmission fluid dextron 3 . He answered it wrong because power steering fluid is completely different fluid with automatic transmission fluid , you can't put transmission fluid on power steering reservoir .

Where do you pour the power steering fluid

Look at the engine where the belts are. You should see the power steering pump. The pump has a cap with a built in dipstick (black in color). Twist it 1/4 turn counter clockwise and pull it off. The power steering fluid goes in there. Be carefull not to overfill it because when it gets hot and you turn your wheels, it will overflow out of the top.

2003 trailblazer has a knock in steering not all the time but sometime also a whining sort of like the power steering pump but dont do it much either

Have you been changing the power steering fluid every
30,000,miles when doing the trans fluid at 30,000

When you do that add some lubgard for P/S
just don't use the honda version

Get the Fluid at the dealers parts counter
& lubgard at auto parts

The knock may be a worn steering rack if you have one.
That happens when the fluid isn't changed

1991 dodge ram 250 5.9 cummins diesel. Power steering not working. When the new pump is in the vehicle and take the pressure line off the back of the pump no fluid comes out. took out pump put it on the...

we had the same thing happen. After jacking the front end of the truck up and cracking the supply and return lines at the steering box . Let idle for 2-3 min or until fluid starts to seep out of fittings. It appears that it was air locked some were. It seems like the steering is getting better as the air works its way out of the system. O don't for get to retighten the fittings again. Good luck.

Where is the steering fluid located on a 1997 poinitac grand prix

The steering fluid reserve is on top of the power steering pump which is located behind the engine block (between engine and passenger compartment) on passenger seat side of vehicle. The steering pump has a large pulley that is driven by the serpentine belt, it is lower than the alternator which has a small pulley. The steering fluid reserve is directly on top of the steering pump, it's not too easy to reach (you will get dirty) but you can twist the plastic cap on top of it to the left to remove and there should be a dipstick attached to the cap. You may need to use a funnel or tube to add fluid.

Power steering now broken

The leak is probably from one of the hoses, you will only here squealing if the steering box gets air into it, not hearing any noise is a good thing at this point, just be sure to keep fluid in the reservoir to keep air out, just don't over fill it. First, try any over the counter power steering stop leaks from any auto parts store, 9 times out of 10 that won't fix you problem, but it is worth a try. If that does not work you have two options, get the leaky hose replaced, or just keep fluid in the reservoir.

Hope this helps
