Glow plugs. Check the connection and activation of the glow plugs at morning startup. Once it's warmed, their not needed and it will start easily all day. 6.0s and 7.3s are known for this problem. I replaced many of them. You have to pull the valve covers to replace them, their underneath the valve covers. Just unscrew them from the head, screw and tighten the replacements, connect the wires and put the covers back on. With new gaskets of course.
Yes. I'll try to explain this. The glow plugs work by electric resistance. When they are clean and new, they work very well as there is no crud or coating on each part. The material composing each glow plug deteriorates over time something like a sparkplug.
The amount of time it takes to heat up increases as the glow plugs fail. This puts a strain on the wiring feeding the glow plug circuit.
You can test each individual glow plug using auto jumper cables and securing one end to the base and the other is briefly shorted to the top of the glow plug using battery voltage
Be careful-they melt. As you will see, some stay dark(bad) and some glow brightly(good). Or you can just put in all new glow plugs and be done with it.
Two part answer, firstly the glow plug light. The glow plug light on a Ssangyong will only illuminate if the ambient temperature is low enough for the glow plugs to require heating. I did not believe it when I first heard this but sure enough, on the first frosty morning I had the truck, the glow plug light came on for a few seconds. Don't worry about it, the temperature needs to be really cold before it will come on. Secondly the no-start issue, I had a similar problem with my Ssangyong Rexton. Unfortunately, it is the injector pump, the filter gets clogged with micro-particles of crud. Take it to a diesel pump specialist (as a Ssangyong dealer won't know what to do in my experience and they will charge $000's to fix) and get them to remove and clean the injector pump.
glow plugs have absolutly nothing to do with the car not going over 20 mph. sorry, but you gotta keep on em. at a guess i would say it was due to them doing a t-belt and not setting the timing right somehow. but that's just a guess.... while I love my TDI, the service and parts at most VW dealers are at the bottom of the list
Probably have one or more glow plugs bad...- There is a testing method, and I think they are easy to replace - when the temperature outdoors changes, you'll almost have to replace them, as you'll about never get a diesel started in the cold otherwise -...
Did you ever find a solution to this? I have a 2000 Hyundai Galloper (basically the same car) and I am having the exact same problem. I have replaced the glow plugs 3 times in the past 12 months.
HI,AS IT IS HARD TO START THESE EXTRA COLD MORNINGS WE ARE GETTING,TRY A SET OF GLOW PLUGS, YOU CAN SEE THEM ACROSS THE FRONT OF THE CYLINDER HEAD,WITH A WIRE JOINING THEM UP,YOU WILL NEED A 8mm SCOKET , FOR THE WIRE, AND A DEEP 12mm ONE FOR THE PLUGS,UNSCREW TO THE LEFT,AND PUT A BIT OF GREASE ON THE THREAD OF THE NEW ONES AS THEY CROSS TREAD EASY,ABOUT 17POUNDS FOR A SET,THANKS.
