Question about 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser

1 Answer

Maybe it's the serpentine belt

While I was driving, I heard a lout POP (I thought I ran over something) and then all of a sudden it was VERY difficult to steer the car. I can only assume it's the serpentine belt that broke. Is that easy to fix myself? I'm a female, in my 20's, with NO car fixing experience. Thank you so much!!!!!!!

There not hard to change if you have a general idea how it works.
there should be a diagram of how the belt is could follow that but i would suggest going to a friend or a shop that has have to remove the motor mount I believe.its a tight fit.
Good Luck

Did you open the hood? It could be a popped serpentine belt or a broken timing chain or timing belt.

My ford focus power steering went out . I opened the hood and the belt on the left side of the engine next to the power steering . Is that the power steering belt ??

They do not stretch that much. That engine uses a serpentine belt. Something has gone bad that caused the belt to come loose. All pulleys must be inspected to diagnose the problem.

I dont think its the motor but it sounds like maybe something inside the timing belt let go, when you do the timing belt did you replace the tensioner and pulley, if not then maybe one of the idler pulleys for the belt went bad, or it may just be a bad ignition coil or fuel pump. i would have the computer scanned first to see if there are any codes. the codes are very helpful as they will tell you if something has failed like a coil. 140,000 miles is not alot for a camry and i dont think its a bad engine. good day.

Check alternator belt. Light is to show alternator working, not battery state.
If you have a volt meter check output is around 12.5 -14.5 volts when car running.

I was driving and heard a pop noise and then my 97

could be the timing chain. Was it a pop or more like a ping . A ping could indicate a timing chain problem. The tensioner might have gone bad.
its not hard to replace for an experienced mechanic

Something fell off, there was smoke, help!

I can only assume what you've described is a snapped serpentine belt. I would suggest not driving the vehicle until you have all the pertaining pulleys checked for this is why most belts fail. Thank you, Dana

Heard POP, Power steering got hard, Serpentine Belt came off

With the engine cool, turn all of the pulleys by hand to find the one w/ that will not turn, or the one that has the most resistance. That will be your problem. As far as the engine over heating, all you can do is a pressure check on the cooling system to see if it has any internal leaks if there are none on the outside. If there are none, and it holds good pressure, then fill it backup, replace whatever accessory it was that died, and throw another belt on it.
