Hi, this is a common problem you need to get the sender unit in the tank replaced as the one you have got now is not working, the problem is to do this you need to make sure the tank is low on fuel or empty as you need to lower the tank because you need to get to the top of the tank to get the sender unit out as it comes out from the top of the tank.

have a look to see if you have an inspection panel in the boot/trunk under the carpet about the size of a saucer from cup and saucer, if you find this panel you dont need to make sure the fuel is low as the tank can stay in place but if you have no panel you need to undo all the pipes and electrics to the tank and then lower the tank to get access to the sender unit.

if you doing this yourself then the best thing to do would be to buy the new sender unit so you know exactly what your looking for when getting the old one off.

before you think about changing the sender unit check your fuse box and check every fuse and if one is blown replace it for one of the same type then check the fuel gauge as it could be a blown fuse but most of the time its the sender unit in the tank

let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok

please rate this solution, thanks

My 03 chevy Malibu overheated but NEVER got into the red, I put water in it to get home and at the stop light it just cut off. we replaced water pump but still wont start

Hi Stephanie:
Water coming out the exhaust can be normal, BUT, if there is white vapour and the fluid level in the radiator is going down, that is a key indicator of a bad head gasket.
You could TRY a TEMPORARY fix with a radiator sealant, but replacing the head gasket can get expensive.
A compression test will tell you if there is a bad head gasket.
Also, check the dipstick to see if there is any indication of oil in the crank case.
Hope this helps.

Malibu engine diagram

The fill plug. Stand on the drivers side. Look down to the right of the air induction system/ air filter to the throttle body. You will see a red knob on the transmission. This is the fill point. But to check fluid level, you have to get under the car. Sending a picture. this plug(65) is on the passenger side. When fluid comes out. it is full. while running in park. USE jack stands. df714ab9-55b5-4a69-827a-c378c4d2afe7.gif

Coolant level sensor

It may be an engine cooling problem, ie thermostat, pump etc. seems as thought the car's computer is shutting down systems to prevent some type of major failure. Have cooling system and even electrical system checked.

My 2001 chevy malibu has a symbol on the dash board of a red square with an arrow pointing down towards water. what does that mean?

The indicator is for low coolant level. Fill the reservoir and check the radiator for proper levels. Check for leakage at the hoses and at the water pump.

I have a red warning light that is activating on my 1999 Malibu Dash. It is on the lower right hand side & looks like a low water indicator. My fluid levels all seem fine.

If your collant level is ok, check your coolant level sensor. Its located on the coolant reservoir, usually at the bottom!! If faulty it will illuminate the low coolant indicator.

The gas gauge isn't working correctly. When I fill up it does'nt go all the way up then it works eradically up and down. Unstable 1997 chevy malibu ls 3.1.

The problem is with your car's fuel level sensor which is located inside the gas tank and attached to the fuel pump, open the fuel pump and try cleaning the fuel level sensor parts it should be fine. Hope it helps and please don't forget to rate the answer it helps me, thanks!

Yellow light on dash with flashing exclamation point inside it, what does this mean?

Hi !
The Yellow Exclamation Point is the indicator of malfunction in the Power Steering system.
1. Check the Tension of the Power steering Belt.
2. Check Oil level of Power steering , this must be below MIN level.
This is in a white bottle next to Break fluid.

P0171 and p0463

Replace the fuel pump module (inside the fuel tank) it has 2 level sensors on it. The po463 code is an open condition on the high level sensor, one sensor reports to the ECM, other to your gas gauge on the dash.
