On the back side of the brakes, will be 2 bolts attached to steering knuckle. You have 2 ways to remove it. You can take the 2 bolts that hold the caliper onto the caliper mounting bracket, usually a rubber boot on them, then remove the caliper. At that point, you'll have easier access to the 2 remaining bolts that screw into the knuckle. The other option is just remove the whole assembly, remove the 2 bolts in the mounting bracket to remove the whole thing.

Hi Douglas, I'm glad to help. My first suggestion is to get to complete shaft. This way you want have any problems later on. It's not that much more expensive and you'll be glad you did. Below is the procedure for replacing them.



FRONT DRIVESHAFTS

REMOVAL
  1. Raise vehicle on jack stands or centered on a frame contact type hoist. Refer to Hoisting in the Lubrication And Maintenance section of this manual for the required lifting procedure to be used for this vehicle.
  2. Remove the cotter pin and nut lock Hub And Bearing To Stub Axle Retaining Nut from the end of the stub axle.
  3. Remove the wheel and tire assembly from the vehicle.
  4. Remove the wave washer Wave Washer from the end of the stub axle CAUTION: Wheel bearing damage will result if after loosening hub nut, vehicle is rolled on the ground or the weight of the vehicle is allowed to be supported by the tires.
  5. With the vehicle's brakes applied to keep hub from turning, loosen and remove the stub axle to hub nut.
  6. Remove the two front disc brake caliper to steering knuckle attaching bolts Front Disc Brake Caliper Attaching Bolts
  7. Remove the disc brake caliper from the steering knuckle. Caliper is removed by first rotating top of caliper away from steering knuckle and then removing bottom of caliper out from under machined abutment on steering knuckle Brake Caliper Mounting To Steering Knuckle
  8. Support disc brake caliper assembly by using a wire hook and suspending it from the strut assembly Correctly Supported Disc Brake Caliper Do not allow the brake caliper assembly to hang by the brake flex hose.
  9. Remove the brake rotor from the hub and bearing assembly Remove/Install Brake Rotor
  10. Remove nut attaching outer tie rod end to steering knuckle Removing Tie Rod End Attaching Nut Nut is to be removed from tie rod end using the following procedure, hold tie rod end stud with a 11/32 socket while loosening and removing nut with a wrench.
  11. Remove tie rod end from steering knuckle using Remover, Special Tool MB-991113 Tie Rod End Removal From Steering Knuckle Arm
  12. Remove the steering knuckle to ball joint stud, clamping nut and bolt Control Arm To Steering Knuckle Attachment from the steering knuckle.
  13. Using a pry bar, separate steering knuckle from ball joint stud Separating Ball Joint Stud From Steering Knuckle Note: Use caution when separating ball joint stud from steering knuckle, so ball joint seal does not get cut. NOTE: Care must be taken not to separate the inner C/V joint during this operation. Do not allow driveshaft to hang by inner C/V joint after removing outer C/V Joint from the hub/bearing assembly in steering knuckle, end of driveshaft must be supported.
  14. Pull steering knuckle assembly out and away from the outer C/V joint of the driveshaft assembly Steering Knuckle Separation From Driveshaft
  15. Support the outer end of the driveshaft assembly. Insert a pry bar between inner tripod joint and transaxle case Disengaging Inner Tripod Joint From Transaxle Pry against inner tripod joint, until tripod joint retaining snap ring is disengaged from transaxle side gear.
  16. Hold inner tripod joint and interconnecting shaft of driveshaft assembly. Remove inner tripod joint from transaxle, by pulling it straight out of transaxle side gear and transaxle oil seal Tripod Joint Removal from Transaxle When removing tripod joint, do not let spline or snap ring drag across sealing lip of the transaxle to tripod joint oil seal.
INSTALLATION
  1. Thoroughly clean spline and oil seal sealing surface, on tripod joint. Lightly lubricate oil seal sealing surface on tripod joint with fresh clean transmission lubricant.
  2. Holding driveshaft assembly by tripod joint and interconnecting shaft, install tripod joint into transaxle side gear as far as possible by hand Tripod Joint Removal from Transaxle
  3. Grasp inner tripod joint an interconnecting shaft. Forcefully push the tripod joint into side gear of transaxle, until snap ring is engaged with transaxle side gear. Test that snap ring is fully engaged with side gear by attempting to remove tripod joint from transaxle by hand. If snap ring is fully engaged with side gear, tripod joint will not be removable by hand.
  4. Clean all debris and moisture out of steering knuckle, in the area were outer C/V joint will be installed into steering knuckle.
  5. Ensure that front of outer C/V joint which fits against the face of the hub and bearing is free of debris and moisture before installing outer C/V joint into hub and bearing assembly Outer C/V Joint Inspection
  6. Slide drive shaft back into front hub and bearing assembly. Then install steering knuckle onto the stud of the ball joint assembly Steering Knuckle Separation From Driveshaft
  7. Install a new steering knuckle to ball joint clamping bolt and nut Control Arm To Steering Knuckle Attachment Tighten the clamping bolt and nut to a torque of 135 N·m (100 ft. lbs.)
  8. Install tie rod end into steering knuckle. Start attaching nut onto stud of tie rod end. While holding stud of tie rod end stationary using a 11/32 socket, Removing Tie Rod End Attaching Nut tighten tie rod end to steering knuckle attaching nut. Then using a crowfoot and 11/32 socket Torquing Tie Rod End Attaching Nut , tighten the tie rod end attaching nut to a torque of 54 N·m (40 ft. lbs.)
  9. Install braking disc on hub and bearing assembly Remove/Install Brake Rotor
  10. Install disc brake caliper assembly on steering knuckle. Caliper is installed by first sliding bottom of caliper under abutment on steering knuckle, and then rotating top of caliper against top abutment Brake Caliper Mounting To Steering Knuckle
  11. Install disc brake caliper assembly to steering knuckle attaching bolts Front Disc Brake Caliper Attaching Bolts Tighten the disc brake caliper assembly attaching bolts to a torque of 22 N·m (195 in. lbs.)
  12. Clean all foreign matter from the threads of the outer C/V joint stub axle. Install the washer and stub axle to hub/bearing assembly nut on stub axle and securely tighten nut.
  13. Install front wheel and tire assembly. Install and tighten the wheel mounting stud nuts in proper sequence until all nuts are torqued to half the required specification. Then repeat the tightening sequence to the full specified torque of 135 N·m (100 ft. lbs.)
  14. Lower vehicle.
  15. With the vehicle's brakes applied to keep hub from turning, tighten the hub nut to a torque of 244 N·m (180 ft. lbs.) Torquing Front Stub Axle To Hub Nut
  16. Install the spring wave washer on the end of the stub axle.
  17. Install the hub nut lock, and a new cotter pin Hub And Bearing To Stub Axle Retaining Nut Wrap cotter pin prongs tightly around the hub nut lock as shown in Hub And Bearing To Stub Axle Retaining Nut
  18. Check for correct fluid level in transaxle assembly. Refer to Group 21, Transaxle for the correct fluid level checking procedure for the type of transaxle being checked.
  19. Set front toe on vehicle to required specification.

Right front wheel bearing is bad how do I change it


  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely. Place jackstands under the frame, then lower the vehicle slightly to allow the control arms to hang free.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  3. Insert a drift punch into the caliper and rotor vanes to prevent the rotor from turning, then remove the hub/drive axle nut. Clean the threads of the nut.
    1. Unfasten the caliper mounting bolts, then remove and support the caliper aside with a suitable piece of wire.
    2. Remove the rotor by sliding it from the hub.
    3. If equipped with ABS, detach the front wheel speed sensor connector and unclip it from the dust shield.

    The hub and bearing are replaced only as an assembly.
    For 1987-92 vehicles, perform the following:
  4. Using a suitable front hub spindle removal tool, separate the hub from the halfshaft.
  5. Remove the hub and bearing retaining bolts, shield, hub and bearing assembly and the O-ring.
  6. Separate the ball joint from the steering knuckle, using the proper tool.
  7. Remove the halfshaft assembly and tap the seal from the steering knuckle. Remove the steering knuckle from the hub.
  8. For 1993-99 vehicles, perform the following:
    1. Unfasten the hub and bearing retaining bolts and dust shield.
    2. Place the transaxle in PARK.
    3. Using a suitable front hub spindle removal tool, separate the hub and bearing from the drive axle.
    4. If necessary, remove the steering knuckle.

  9. Clean the rust and foreign material from the knuckle mounting face, bore and chamfer to allow the bearing to properly seat in the knuckle.
To install:
  1. For 1993-99 vehicles, perform the following:
    1. If removed, install the steering knuckle.
    2. Position the hub and bearing assembly to the drive axle. Apply a light coating of grease to the knuckle bore. If the new hub and bearing has a protective plastic cover, remove it before installation. Also, do not handle the knuckle or hub assembly by the ABS sensor wire.
    3. Install a new drive axle nut and draw the hub and bearing onto the axle.
    4. Place the transaxle in NEUTRAL.
    5. Install the dust shield, being careful not to damage the bearing outboard lip seal.
    6. Install the hub and bearing bolts, then tighten to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).

  2. For 1987-92 vehicles, perform the following:
    1. Install a new hub and bearing seal in the steering knuckle with a suitable seal installation tool. Install the steering knuckle to the strut.
    2. Lubricate the hub and bearing with grease. Fill the cavity between the seal and bearing completely.
    3. Install the halfshaft.
    4. Connect the ball joint to the steering knuckle and insert a new O-ring around the hub and bearing assembly.
    5. Install the hub and bearing, and shield into the steering knuckle. Tighten the bolts to 70 ft. lbs. (90 Nm).

  3. If equipped, attach the ABS front wheel speed sensor connector, then clip the wire to the dust shield.
  1. Install the rotor and caliper assembly. Tighten the caliper bolts to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm).
  2. Insert a drift punch into the caliper and rotor vanes to prevent the rotor from turning. If not already done, install the shaft washer and nut (if equipped). Tighten the nut to the following specifications:
  3. 1987-88 vehicles: 3 ft. lbs. (270 Nm).
  4. 1989-90 vehicles: 15 ft. lbs. (260 Nm).
  5. 1991-99 vehicles: 107 ft. lbs. (145 Nm).
  6. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  7. Carefully lower the vehicle, then tighten the lug nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (136 Nm).

I am currently changing front pads and think i should pack the wheel bearings but don't know how. its not covered in the haynes manual i got


Here I have the Step by Step :

Wheel and tire assembly Brake caliper and secure it out of the way with a piece of mechanic-s wire. Do not let the caliper hang on the hose. Brake rotor Halfshaft retaining nut and discard it Cotter pin and castellated nut from the tie rod end and separate the tie rod end from the steering knuckle using a suitable removal tool. Discard the cotter pin. Separate the tie rod end from the wheel knuckle ABS sensor bolt and the sensor, if equipped Strut mounting nuts and the studs which attach the strut assembly to the steering knuckle Strut from the steering knuckle Lower ball joint pinch bolt. Carefully pry down on the lower control arm to separate the ball joint stud from the steering knuckle. Wheel hub, knuckle and bearing assembly from the vehicle

Change front disc brakes


Except Srt-4
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. Remove the front wheels.
  3. Remove the 2 caliper to steering knuckle guide pin bolts.
  4. Lift the caliper away from the steering knuckle by first rotating the free end of the caliper away from the steering knuckle. Then, slide the opposite end of the caliper out from under the machined end of the steering knuckle.
  5. Support the caliper from the upper control arm to prevent the weight of the caliper from being supported by the brake flex hose that will damage the hose.
  6. Remove the brake pads from the caliper. Remove the outboard brake pad by prying the pad retaining clip over the raised area on the caliper. Then, slide the pad down and off the caliper. Pull the inboard brake pad away from the piston until the retaining clip is free from the cavity in the piston.
  7. If required, the rotor can be removed by pulling it straight off the wheel mounting studs.
To install:
  1. Clean all parts well. Inspect the caliper for piston seal leaks (brake fluid in and around the boot area and inboard lining) and for any ruptures of the piston dust boot. If the boot is damaged or fluid leak is visible, disassemble the caliper and install a new seal and boot (and piston, if scored).
  2. Inspect the caliper pin bushings. Replace if damaged, dry or brittle.
  3. Completely compress the piston into the caliper using a large C-clamp or other suitable tool.
  4. Lubricate the area on the steering knuckle where the caliper slides with high temperature grease.
  5. Reinstall the rotor if removed.
  6. Reinstall the brake pads into the caliper. Note that the inboard and outboard pads are different. Make sure the inboard brake shoe assembly is positioned squarely against the face of the caliper piston.

    NOTE Be sure to remove the noise suppression gasket paper cover if the pads come so equipped.

  7. Carefully position the caliper and brake shoe assemblies over the rotor by hooking the lower end of the caliper over the steering knuckle. Then, rotate the caliper into position at the top of the steering knuckle. Make sure the caliper guide pin bolts, bushings and sleeves are clear of the steering knuckle bosses.
  8. Reinstall the caliper guide pin bolts and torque to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
  9. Reinstall the wheels and torque the lug nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (135 Nm).
  10. Pump the brake pedal until the brake pads are seated and a firm pedal is achieved before attempting to move the vehicle.
  11. Road test the vehicle for proper operation.

find out what tool you need to remove bolts for the caliper(2) once you get the bolts out remove caliper. next step remove old pads.then you will need a c clamp to compress piston on the caliper back in then get new pads and install them on caliper easy fix reinstall caliper on to rotor and put bolts back in just observe how the caliper came off

How to replace a front wheel bearing for a 1999


Removal: Raise and support vehicle. Remove wheel. Remove caliper assembly. DO NOT allow caliper to hang from brake hose. Always support caliper by wiring it to frame. Remove rotor.
Loosen and remove ABS speed sensor mounting screw. Carefully remove sensor head from steering knuckle. If sensor head is seized due to corrosion, use hammer and brass punch to tap sensor. Tap edge of sensor ear, rocking sensor from side to side until it is free. DO NOT use pliers on sensor head.
Remove axle shaft nut. Remove 3 bolts securing hub assembly to steering knuckle. Pull hub straight back from knuckle. If hub is corroded, pry between hub flange and knuckle
Fully remove knuckle pinch bolt. Insert pry bar between lower control arm and steering knuckle. Push down on pry bar to separate ball joint stud from steering knuckle. Ensure ball joint dust boot is not damaged during removal. Loosen and remove strut-to-knuckle nuts. Bolts are serrated where installed into knuckle. DO NOT turn bolts in steering knuckle. Use soft-face hammer to drive bolts out of knuckle. Remove knuckle from vehicle.

Installation: To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten all nuts and bolts to specification. DO NOT fully tighten axle nut until vehicle is on ground. Ensure hub mounting surfaces are clean and free of foreign material. Coat speed sensor with high temperature grease before installing onto knuckle.

This is for the front: Removal & Installation
  1. Remove 2/3 of the brake fluid from the master cylinder.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Wheel
    • Caliper. Suspend the caliper from the frame with mechanic's wire. Do not allow the caliper to hang from the brake hose.
    • Caliper mounting bracket bolts
    • Caliper mounting bracket from the steering knuckle assembly
    • Brake pads from the caliper mounting bracket
    • Clips from the inside ends of the caliper mounting bracket and discard
To install:
  1. Install or connect the following:
    • Clips to the inside ends of the caliper mounting bracket
    • Brake pads to the caliper mounting bracket
    • Inner pad (1 wear indicator)
    • Outer pad (2 wear indicators)
    • Caliper mounting bracket to the steering knuckle assembly
  2. Perform the following procedure before installing the caliper mounting bracket bolts:
    • Remove all traces of the original adhesive patch.
    • Clean the threads of the bolt with brake parts cleaner or the equivalent and allow to dry.
    • Apply red Loctite®272 to the threads of the bolt.
  3. Install or connect the following:
    • Caliper mounting bracket bolts to the steering knuckle. Tighten the caliper guide pin bolts to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm) on 15 series or 80 ft. lbs. (108 Nm) on 25/35 series.
    • Caliper
    • Tire and wheel assembly
  4. Refill the master cylinder to the proper level with fresh brake fluid. Pump the brake pedal slowly and firmly in order to seat the brake pads. Burnish the brakes as needed.

you have to raise vechicle.use jack stands.block rear wheels.apply parking brake.when loosen axle nut.its more easier to leave wheel on.let vechicle weight hold wheel from turning while you loosen axle nut.you need to get a 1/2 break bar or large ratchett wrench with a deep socket .you need to buy socket use to remove axle nut a regular socket would probably break.when you remove the axle nut.remove brake caliper and brake pads.set them aside dont disconnect brake caliper.get a piece of wire to hang it out the way.dont use brake hose.could damage it. remove brake caliper support bracket then the rotor.get a hub removing tool remove hub.then loosen hub and bearings bolts .then remove shield hub and bearings assembly with O-ring.disconnect ball joint from steering knuckle using the proper tool.remove the halfshaft assembly and tap the seal from the steering knuckle.remove the steering knuckle from the hub.now that drive axle out the way.get the seal removing tool.its a flat tool with two hooks on it.to pry seal out transmission.or you can use a small chisel to clapse the seal but be careful dont damage the seal housing.when installing new seal coat it with transmission fluid.drive it in using a large socket.if you are reusing same axle replace circlip on the end of it.now putting back together.install a new hub and bearing seal in the steering knuckle with a seal installer tool .install steering knuckle to the strut.lubricate the hub and bearings with grease.install halfshaft.connect ball joint to the steering knuckle .install a new O-ring around the hub and bearing assembly.install hub and bearing assembly into the steering knuckle.tighten bolts to 75 ft lbs.install rotor then brake caliper support bracket bolts 120 to148 ft lbs.this is mounting bracket bolts only not the caliper bolts to brake shoes.put brake shoes and caliper back on torque 38 ft lbs.install shaft washer the axle nut to 180 ft lbs.tighten much as you can.before setting car on ground.to torque it to 180 ft lbs place car wheel back on set it down so the car weight keep wheel from turning.i hope this information works out for you good luck.and work safe.
