Knock sensor Pulled up to auto zone, guy put diagnostic ebd scanner on car, came up with faulty knock sensor suggesting bad ground How do I replace sensor on a 5th gen maxima?

For replace the knock sensor on a maxima.
You need to remove the intake manifold.
If not, you have no access to the sensor.
This prosses require about 3.5 hour labor.

I asked yesterday didn't get helpful feed back. 2000 impala LS. Knocking and smell of fumes. No drop in oil pressure. Seems sluggy.and now it dies at stop lights. Could it be knock sensor.

yes, this could be the cause. A faulty knock sensor could be advising engine control that there is excessive pre-ignition and to retard the spark advance.
Your best bet is to take it to a good mechanic with the proper equipment to read the diagnostic code(s). You may also have the check engine light illuminated.

The valve springs knocking

Valve springs don't knock. And never listen to the advice at any parts store, have a trained techincian look at the problem. It sounds like you do have low oil pressure and it is not the sensor that is acting up. Tend to this ASAP or you will damage a $5000.00 engine.

How do you know if the knock sensor needs to be replaced

First, try using a higher grade of gasoline in the engine if you're experiencing knock. If the higher grade of gasoline hasn't improved overall performance you should take the car to a dealership or trustworthy mechanic and have them perform a diagnostic. If you already have a "check engine, or service engine soon" light active on your dash, you could stop at an Auto Zone and ask them to use their ODB2 code reader (This is a complimentary service at most Auto Zone stores).

The car wont excelerate and i know all is fine with everything except a sensor and i knowits not the o2 sensor whats the other one called?

If you have a bad sensor, it should store a trouble code in the onboard diagnostic computer. Have it scanned for codes to narrow the problem down. There is no point to guessing. if no scanner then most auto parts store will scan for free. advanced auto, auto zone, etc. check to be sure fuel filter is not plugging up. maf sensor symtoms, poor running, stalling, check engine light should be on. lack of power, spark knock/detonation, buck/****, hesitation on acceleration,also hard shifts. check fuel filter first !! if you need more info. just let me know.

Diagnostic code produces P0420 catalyst system efficiency below threshold-Bank 1. Probable causes are listed as follows:
1-air leak in exhaust before rear 02 sensor, 3-Fuel system fault,
4-faulty catalytic converter.

If it is a 97, go to the nearest Auto Zone. As long as the engine warning light is on, they will hook it up to their diagnostic computer and read the codes, telling you what is wrong.

This could be anything,from a knock sensor,to a bad ignition coil.To find out,put it on a scanner,to get a idea where to start looking.Auto zone will put a code reader on it,and tell you the code.But don`t just replace what they say,do some thinking,and come back on line for help.So we can narrow it down.

Exactly same prob.

99% of the time we mechanics tend to trust computer of what it tells us when it come to engine diagnostic; i hate to not agree with VW mech which he pull the code and state is knock sensor although I have ran into computer spit out many wrong code and still does not fix the problem however I go ahead and replace it any way. Now if that does not fix the issue after replacing with new parts, I then would go back and plug computer back in to see what other code it would spit out. my opinion, I would also have your air-mass flow sensor check, some people don't realized throttle control/airmass flow sensor also link into the ECU compute between the revolution sensor of the transmission telling computer is time to shift. faulty air-mass sensor can also cause it to bogs or not picking up speed giving a false sense the transmission is not working correctly. you can go to auto zone and use their computer for free if you need to re-pull the code after replacing the knock sensor.

You can replace them, I assume they are very expensive, I did a toyota avalon once, since it was a V6 it sits in that V6 valley. It was hell trying to get to. The parts was very expensive for a pair of piezo crystals, which is what a knock sensor is. They are almost like those little piezo element for tweeters that you can buy for 5 bucks. LOL

As far as there being no knock sensor on a 99 2.2 I beg to differ. I have a 99 legacy and just had a diagnostic done and mine is bad. If there is no knock sensor why would it say it was bad and why does Auto Zone, Advanced Auto and my local Subaru dealer sell them. Mine is located under the throttel body and they are rather hard to get to. No offence to who ever said ther is no knock sensor but maby you should recheck your information becuse I know there is a knock sensor since I just changed mine.
