Question about 1998 Ford Taurus

Starter vs starter selonoid

Turned on the ignition got nothing but lights and radio. Not even the sound of the starter selonoid kicked in. Would it be the motor starter or the starter selonoid switch? Is there anyway to tell before taking it to a mechanic.

Could be your ignition key cylinder lock. I have same problem and replaced the lock cylinder with a generic one from A Z. It now starts the car but in my case it wont turn it off due to parts broken in the steering colmn. If you dont have broken parts in the column then the replacement clyinder lock may work for you.

Why will the starter on a 2004 alero not ingage even after replacement?

Check battery voltage should have better than 12 volts DC. Then check voltage at starter selonoid should have voltage in and out with key on if not selonoid is bad .If it does you don't have the wires in the right places or the one from the selonoid isn't hooked up plus make sure all connections are tight.

When i turn the key nothing happens also has new battery

check for power at starter and also check for power on ignition wire on starter selonoid while ignition is turned to start position. be cautious as it could engage. do you have power to trk radio, lights etc?? If not then check all batt cables connections to batt and grounds and to starter. also check fuses for a starter relay.

Hello, my son 2001 f150 supercrew 4x4 will not start, I think it is the starter selonoid. Does this make and model have starter seloniod separate from the starter. I remember a ford that had the selonoid...

If it is not the ignition fuse, that is what I would think it was. There might also be a bad connection to the starter as well. Make sure the wires are correct and everything is grounded. If all that checks out, try the starter selonoid. If you have a question, write back. Thanks for using FixYa.

Car won't start. its got a hot battery. Turn key, dash lights up but does nothing, not even click. got under car to ckeck starter used screwdriver on selonoid and it turned over fine. turn key switch...

If your car rolls over when you short the selonoid then the possibilities are limited.
The most likely is your neutral safety switch
the others are the ignition switch or damaged wiring.

My 86 olds 98 won't start

It should be in the harness with the others that go to the starter, its a small wire that comes from the ignition switch it hooks to the small post next to the main post on the starter selonoid thats what kicks the selonoid in witch in turn, turns the starter.

1994 Toyota Tercel Starter Problems

sounds to me that you have an igniton problem not a starter problem and or if you have or had an alarm system could be cause if u do give me feedback and i will explain but seems that your starter is fine from what u say but if you think in terms of the elemts to start a vehicle batery gives pwoer to ignition which sends to starter which gives spark etc i would check you ignition system something is causeing a short and not alowing starter to function

Starter won't turn over,I shorted selenoid with screwdriver and it kicked in selenoid and started,,ok bad selonoid,,I just replaced with new starter and selonoid,,still won't kick seloniod in,,shorting...

That wire may be coming from a relay so you may need a service manual to find which one it is.
BTW, to save frying all of your screwdrivers, applying 12 volts for a moment to the terminal with the smaller gauge wire will cause the solenoid to operate as it was designed. Shorting across the main solenoid terminals lets ~ 100-200 amps flow through your screwdriver which isn't even a very good conductor.
Even a light clip lead to the coil terminal of the solenoid could handle the lower current that flows there.
For purposes of doing several different engine tasks, I made up a momentary pushbutton switch contraption housed in a plastic film canister, put 6' wires and heavy clips on it so I could 'jiggle' an engine into the next cycle.
