You'll connect one side of the button to constant 12v. like the battery positive and the other side of the switch will go to the trigger wire of the starter. This is the wire that tells the starter what to do.

My 05 toyota corolla won't start its not the battery . all electrics working well and it did start today with a push from aa man who sez it could be starter motor but i'm not so sure . i have

What happens when you try to start the engine with the key? Does the starter motor turn over the engine normally? If yes, the problem isn't the starter motor.
If the starter motor doesn't work at all, or works but struggles to turn over the engine, there are four likely possibilities: a bad starter, a bad starter relay, a bad ignition switch or a weak battery.
Even if a battery shows 12+ volts, that doesn't mean it has enough power to turn the starter (because it's not just the voltage that counts ... it's the number of amperes (quantity) of electricity that can be delivered.)
The fact that your car could be push-started suggests that the problem is somewhere in the battery/starting circuit -- not elsewhere in the engine. If the battery is good (most auto parts shops -- at least in the US -- will test it free), you need to figure out if the ignition switch is getting power to the starter relay, and if the relay is getting power to the starter. If "yes" to both, the starter is bad.

I have 93 dodge power ram and it wont start it has power to the starter but not any where else even with the key in the on position

ignition or starter relay should be checked first.
Faulty ignition switch might be an issue.
You will still need an ignition source before you think about the push button start.
A friend has the same problem, and its a computer issue. (underhood, pass side low on firewall)
best of luck to ya.

Trying to install a push button ignition need to know which two wires to run to the button, without having to spend hours tracing and guessing. A diagram showing the wires would be great.

Your switch has 4 terminals.

1. Red is the hot wire from the battery.
2. Dark Blue is the run wire. This wire powers PCM, and engine and well as all accessories when the key is on.
3. Yellow is the start wire. It powers the engine, ECU and starter circuit when the key is turned to start.
4. Last terminal is accessories. I don't know the color, but it will power the radio, blower, windows, mirrors, etc. when key is turned to ACC. Some diagrams of the switch are below. Please let me know if you have any questions.

My 1990 Cadillac Deville wont start or engage starter

Sounds like you blew fuse. Fix fuse and borrow a car starting switch they use at car repair shops. As long as you can turn tumbler to on ,you can start using the starting switch from repair shop..There should be a way to run a start button to start car and your off/on key should be OK

No power chevy express 1500 van wont start turn the key and nothing.

Hi there, if you turn on the lights do you have head lights? if yes turn the key to start with headlights on does the lights dim? Yes? if yes that means your key is operating the starter if not it means the starter is not receiving a signal from the key to starter, need to know what it does before I go on. If no lights then the battery is dead or you have a corroded battery cable. Let me know for more information.

I have a 89 Chevrolet Chyenne pick-up and all of a sudden it would not crank with the key. I pulled the starter its good, for temporary use I installed a push button starter switch and with the key on it...

You need to see if there is power coming out of the ignition switch, and if it is getting to the trigger wire on the starter. Also check the neutral safety switch or if stickshift, the clutch switch.

Old style starter relay wiring

Normally on the old style starter solenoid/relay you have two large bolts for the battery and starter cables to attach to. There are two other smaller bolts that are used for the starter actuation. The "I" is used to add voltage to the points so the engine will start while the solenoid is in the start position, the other "S" goes to the start button or start side of the ignition switch. Old style ignitions used to drop the voltage to the coil during start and the engine would turn and turn until the key was released and then the engine would catch and start. To cure this they made the solenoids were designed to give temp power to the ignition system when cranking and starting. Hope this helps, RAC

Engine wont start

It sounds like the starter solenoid is bad which if I remember correctly my 1991 Cavalier had the solenoid on the starter.I suggest taking off the starter and having it tested. Most auto parts chains(Pep boys,Autozone)will test your starter for free.I this car is equiped with a seperate starter relay this may also be the problem
