96 4Runnner radio: how to override security code

The AM/FM/Cassette/CD unit on our '91 Previa just went down this past weekend. It was the third time, so I have some idea of the time to get it fixed, and knew that it would probably not be back in for a planned family trip next weekend. So I was happy to find a similar unit from a '96 4Runner on eBay, available immediately, and was lucky enough to get it; it is now on the way. But the previous owner has warned me that, after I have it in, I will need to take the car to a Toyota dealer to have the security code set. Is there a way to do that myself? -- John how to get radio code for 97 toyota 4-runner

As there is no code provided by the company or any other site you have to go to the authorized dealer to set the perfect code.as they can solve your problem in minutes.it can also bring some error in your unit if you insert some wrong code.if that happens even the orignal code would not work properly.you will be charged for it but it would be worth as it would save your time and your unit will start working properly after that.

feel free 4 further assistance n keep sending more question n comments or doubts that arise in ur mind regarding this to me.rate the solution as fixya if it helps u understand n solve ur problem

Didn't have to take mine to a dealership, I found instructions at a forum such as this....I have a 1995 4Runner, with the am/fm/cassette.....if your display sais "SEC" and/or you have a red light showing (possibly key shaped like mine was) on the radio, then this is what I did.

1. hold down "ff" (fast forward on the tape deck) and preset "1" (on the radio buttons) at the same time...this should bring up the code entry mode - you should see either three or four dashes.

2. Now, the code will either be the last three or four digits of the model code on the faceplate of the radio, OR the last three or four digits of your vin number. (mine happened to be the last three of the vin number.) So if you see three dashes, you need three digit...four dashes, etc.

3. Using the radio preset buttons, use the first button to enter the first digit, second for the second, etc... just keep pushing each button until the right digit is displayed.

4. Once you have your code displayed, push and hold either "scan", "sdk", or "T1" (depending on your radio model)...this should turn the radio off. ( on mine, the only one of those three I had was "scan".)

5. Now, you should be able to turn the radio on with the normal power button and normal operation should resume.....well, mine did at least.
Might be the last vin numbers of the original car

Unfortunately there i no unlocking code that will work across the range and if there was toyota would never give it out, sometimes if you go to normal mechanic if they ring the dealer and give them the vin number toyota can give it out over the phone.

Sorry for that ....

Call the XM service number, they will refresh your signals. If it was the head unit, the same problem would occur during AM/FM signal transmission

Radio code

If you don't have the radios security code, you can try entering 1111 as some replacement radios were coded with this security code. Your local Audi Dealer may be able to provide the correct security code for your vehicle, if you provide them with your vehicles Identification Number (VIN). This VIN is typically located on the drivers door pillar.

The radio should have a serial number on the unit which also can be given to the Audi dealer and checked in their data base of radio security codes. The serial number will start with AUZ, one radio serial number for example is AUZ1Z9A1965412.

To enter the code on the Wiesbaden Radio: Turn on the radio, SAFE should be displayed.
Push and hold the AM/FM button, then while holding the AM button down, push and hold down the SCAN button. Release the AM/FM and SCAN buttons, and the display should show 1000. Now enter the correct code using the radio pre-set station buttons (1-4). Button 1 changes the first digit in the code "1"000, Button 2 changes the second digit in the code 1"0"00, button 3 changes the third digit, button 4 changes the last digit in the code. In most cases the first digit is a 1 and won't need to be changed. You push each pre-set station button multiple times to step through the digits (1-9) to get the correct code displayed.

Code 1246 would entered by pushing button "2" two times, pushing button 3 four times, and pushing button 4, six times.

After entering the correct security code, push and hold down the AM/FM button, then while holding down the AM/FM button, push and hold down the SCAN button. The display will then show SAFE, release the two buttons, and now the radio should play correctly.
