When i put it in gear it starts grinding like it wont go all the way into geer

I did this once on an old Toyota land cruiser. The problem was I was on a hard surface and the gears were fighting each other. I had to move b4 I could shift out of 4wd. But I could shift drive gears.
I would try moving truck manually till you can get it out of 4wd.

sounds like spline not seated in coupling recheck shaft connection into trans

You put any vehicle in D & use the vehicle

There is no putting or using any other gear
selection, unless you want to overheat & ruin
the trans & possibly the motor

hi i was wondering if anyone can tell me whats going on with my 89 z24 cav i just replaced two shifter cables on she's a 2.8l 5 speed and now when i starts her and lets the clutch out she dosen't engage at all but she has no noises and no grinding goes in gear fine but just won't move hope someone can help thanks

If it is an automatic transmission, first check the fluid level. If it is low, fill it up and try it again. If the level is fine, then there is a bigger issue and you should seek a professional's help.

check your contact points are set correctly, or may even be burned , if so replace them , its a comon thing if the contact points are badly set ,when you put the car in gear it will stall or wont idle , i had a 67 t/bird landau that did exactly the same , , turning off the highway was a night mare ,i had to keep the accelerator pressed while i braked , otherwise it would stop and then i would have no steering ,very annoying and very dangerous

It sounds to be like you have a syncronizer out on your transmission. This helps your gears mesh without grinding.

5th gear should be to right of nuetral and up towards dasboard.

Hmmmmm...send it to the junk yard! Cost more to fix the transmission than the car is worth.
