Recommended schedule for replacing timing belt

At what milage is it recommended that the timing belt be replaced in a 1999 Ford Escort?  My mom's Escort has 65,000 miles and we were thinking that it was about time to replace it, but when we checked the owner's manual & recommended maintenance schedule, we couldn't find anything on the timing belt.

Does this car have an interference motor?

ford escort/ focus engine 2.0 l spi sohc 1997-2004 has been identified as an intereference engine and that means very likely valve to piston damage
( auto data timing belt information )
note-- up to 2002 year Ford has not recommended a timing belt interval for changing
Ford has however recommended a replacement every 120.000 miles using the service history as a guide
however good professional trade practice recommends every 60.000 miles ( 100.00klms) and the replacement work should include replacement of the crank and cam shaft seals and idler pulleys involved ( the biggest destroyer of belts is oil)
recommended labor time is 2 hours
if the belt has broken then head removal and valve work will add up to 5 hours to that time

I HAVE A 1998 FORD ESCORT 1.6 LX ESTATE WITH A 16V ZETEC ENGINE. THE CAMBELT HAS ONLY DONE 33 THOUSAND MILES BUT HAS BEEN ON FOR 5 YEARS. DO I HAVE TO CHANGE IT SOON.

I would wait for the milage recommendation. (Unless of course you have an oil or coolant leak that is getting on your timing belt) When you do replace it though, have the tensioner and idler pulleys replaced also. The whole deal can be had as a kit.
