Question about 1988 Dodge D-Series Pickups

1998 Dodge 1/2 ton truck transmission

I need to replace a transmission on the above model but I do not know how to identify what type is OEM. Talking to a couple auto parts stores, there are two or three different ones, for example, 4HES and 44RS or something like that. I understand it has something to do with overdrive.
Anyway, if someone could tel me how to identify what type of transmission is currently in the truck, I would appreciate it. Thank you.

Where is the transmission tag id located

for that generation of Ford/Lincoln vehicle (1998-2004)

it's a E40D / 4R100 automatic transmission

so you can look for those letters /numbers on the housing just above the trans pan

but 2 sites give you a better & easier ID-ing of the transmission by counting the bolts and looking at the shape of the transmission pan

another site has a trans type on the door tag: if it's "E", then you got that the type of trans i mentioned above

ask the supervisor of the car dealer's service department, he should know or give you another reference. Doesn't seem like it would work though.

Will a transmission out of a dodge 3/4 ton with a v10 fit in a 1995 of the same?

yes they both use a 48re trans. so does the diesel. a 5.9gas and 5.2 uses a 47re. all dodge v10s and 5.9 diesels in all years 2 wheel and 4 x4 use a 48re. some models don't have the overdrive portion on the back of trans but you can put it on one that doesn't and you can add or remove a transfer case to any of them. you can even use a 47 re it just has weaker bands and cluches

Where is the vehicle speed sencor on a dodge ram 1500 V8 cyl. 1998 . the book says its on the tranny or rearend or could be on the steering colume. can't find it.

If its a 4x4 its in the transfer case near the back on the housing the drive shaft goes into. The one in the rear end is located dead center on top of the differential.
