Re: Rplacing the ignition switch
You will need to remove the steering wheel. Then you will need to use a steering wheel lock remover to remove the lock plate. This can be purchased at most auto parts stores for 20 to 40 dollars. Next you should be able to remove the retaining screw in the ignition switch( be careful not to drop the screw in the colum housing). You may have to work the key back and forth to get the old switch out. Just repeat this process in reverse to install the new key switch.

Suggest disconecting the battery. Then you can work on the problem. it is not clear if the issue is the key stuck in the start position in the iginition switch or if the starter motor is stuck (running) after the car starts. If it the starter motor is running... Time for a new starter. If it is the ignition switch, try
pushing the key in and turning back off. Still stuck? Try pulling pn the key and turning off. Either way, if it is the key, yime for a new ignition switch.
Go under the dash and check to see if the ignition starter switch is coming apart is the first thing to check. The switch is operated by a long rod from the ignition switch, it is near the base of the steering column tube on top of it. The other poss is that the tilt steering is going south and needs new parts for the rod actuator down to the switch.
Disconnect the negative battery cable from the terminal on the battery. Remove the upper and lower steering column covers by unscrewing or unclipping them.
Remove the steering wheel by lifting off the center cover,
disconnecting the horn wire and removing the retaining nut and washer.
Make a mark on the steering wheel spline and the wheel itself so you can
line it back up precisely. Pull the steering wheel straight back to
remove from the shaft.
Take off windshield wiper
and turn signal switches by pulling them off as you did the steering
wheel and disconnect the wiring. Slide the spacer sleeve off of the
Unscrew the ignition switch mounting screws. Pull out the
ignition switch. Disconnect the wiring connector from back of the
ignition switch. Simply loosen the tabs and pull it out.
Insert your key into the ignition. Turn the ignition switch
to the locked position. Depress the retaining pin with a small
screwdriver and turn the key to the Off position to free the cylinder.
Once it is free, turn the key to lock position and remove the key and
Install your old key cylinder into the new ignition switch
assembly. Make sure the contacts in the cylinder and assembly line up.
Reattach wiring to ignition switch, slide it into place, screw in
mounting screws and reassemble steering wheel and switches.
you must get the key to the ACC position. if the steering lock is on, as you turn the key wiggle the steering wheel back and forth at the same time turn the key but keep pressure on it as if you are trying to pull it out, it takes practise to get it, with the ignition key in the ACC position, with the coloum trims removed you should find a small hole in the casting of the lock assm. if not it may be thinly blanked off, just pry the casting away if needed, if found insert a thin rod like the end of an antenna mast into the hole and it will pop out. once out try not to pull the key out or the keys in the barrel will shoot off in all directions
there is a switch in shifter that lets ign. turn back when in park. switch does not come seperate. shifter replacement is req. there is a plug in steering column that can be removed then you put a small screw driver in to push on override button to allow key to turn back. it is located below key.
Have new key cut, stop at hardware store and get liquid wrench spray ,spray lube in cylider, then put key in and out several times briskly before trying to turn.If this does not work open hood and pop shift cable of trans selector lever and reach down and move lever to neutral position two notches.then can tow.
there is a safety switch that prevents the ignition from being turned off and removed while in gear. try putting in nuetral and removing the key. if it does then it is a problem with the shifter and not the ignition.
