Question about 1997 Toyota RAV4

1 Answer

Engine cuts out

Recently my car has been stalling on hot days. The engine starts and then just cuts out. I've tried feeding it some gas on starting it up but this doesn't help.
Any ideas?

Could be a clog in the fuel line, bad antifreze, even a failing fuel injector system. check the folowing for any problems.

  • Air Filter
  • Fuel Filer
  • Air Intake manifold
  • Fuel Line
  • check fuel injector(s) (if possible)
  • check antifreeze/coolant level (flush Radiator if necessary)
  • try a less viscous antifreeze
  • Check Oil (change if necessary/if you find sludge then thats the problem, and you need a certified mechanic to clean the oil system on the whole engine aprox. &1500)
Hope these help

I have a 2006 dodge magnum it will start sometime fine but then it will start then about 3 seconds it would cut off to it to dodge twice they cant find out anything changed the battery got i new key...

can i buy a comma., says Vanna White>?
one rule of dealers, (avoid them use independent ASE shops)
or go broke. ($25 spark plugs there... i warned yah)
rule 2,
never take a car to any dealer unless you can DEMONSTRATE the failure. most shops can NOT fix cars that work,
they will try, and charge you CASH for trying, and no blush.

my impression is, the cars issues are INTERMITTENT.
if you dont know cars and electrics, then it may be impossible for you.
but some nicer independant shops might drive it for a day for you
to get it to fail. that WORKS, see WHY?

your engine stalls. that is the key word, random STALLS.
now lets work that IDEA.
there are 3 paths (one of them works out to 50 causes)
here they are..
1 bad DC power, 2 bad engine , or 3 vbad ISC controls.
all my answers ASSUME the car is 100% tunedup using the 60k miles column ! or up to 100k on some. cars. did you?
when it stalls can YOUR right foot (fast moving) save the stall.
??????????????????
does the stalled engine easily restart?????????????????????

The engine brain, PCM/ECU does all it can to stop stalls.
it does, if it stalls, its a very serious failure !
Now the full list ,( expanded)
1: lost of 12vdc electrical power to the EFI system. (voltmeter 101)
use a voltmeter to catch it. seen even at the cig lighter port.!!!!
2: lost spark? wont restart? (do the classic spark test)
3: lost fueling ? more tests (no start, try test fuel)
3A; flooding,? spark tips soaking wet. use WIDE open throttle to start engine and cut fuel , cranking, this help , try starting with 10% throttle ti see if ISC is stuck closed.
4: bad engine, the 50 ways and engine can fail. lost compression , on any or all cylinders , will do that. hot or cold or both .???????
one way to solve problems is by elimination.
say some head valves stick, only hot and only randomly. (nasty issues)

you find that (not saying it is, i never guess)
you prove that this way, examples
good 12vdc, power, checked.
good spark, checked. on all cylinders, not just 1.
injectors test pass, no leak down test failures and the injector balance test passes. (the FSM covers these 6 tests for fuel pressure)
conclusion"
so must be engine bad, it stalls, and runs bad , restarted or not at all.
so you find compression on 2 cylinders are low , 25psi, hot.
all else was tested good so i attack the engine'.
on old engines, i do that first.

so do tell what engine does and does not fully,
your post leaves out most facts.
stalls, and can you save the stall.
and does it restart.
and do you have 12VDC power at stall.

Engine stalls once engine gets hot

Thinking back to those days. Points and capacitor. I would replace the capacitor. Check the points and if they are pitted then definetly a bad capacitor. Is that fuel line
near the exhaust causing hot gasoline and vapor lock?

Car wont stay running unless foot is on the gas pedal

is the CEL check engine light out running? (it comes on stalled, and is normal that)
stalled. engine stall. no year, now that makes this 10x impossible
and even more impossible no engine stated, (displacement or VIN)
F22? 2.3. 2.7? 3.0L?
if in usa, (no loctation stated ) open hood, look up, see tag?
see vacuum EPA map, see engine type? bingo.

so I wall answer in the generic, (ALL CARS gasoline)
fails hot or cold engine, does hot engine reach 180F and hold?
wow, how low was the oil, off end of stick, none?
stalling is caused by over 50+ things. (we do tests to find it fast )
we use tools, do you have tools, or can buy them, or do you just want
endless guessing. here is the path.
#1 stall maker is a stuck open EGR main valve, ignored during the turn up, clean it. make sure it close
in the macro,
1: bad engine, the hot engine can lose compression and stall.
tool1 the $20buck compression guage.
2: bad spark, or timed wrong. gapped plugs wrong, wrong plugs used. bad wires sets, (old dizzy engines) bad COPS newer cars.
check for hot spark at all spark plugs, skip none.
3: bad fueling (too much or not enough
if engine runs perfect and only idle is too low 800 hot is normal
no DTC 300s misfires, then maybe the ISC is just dirty.
we clean the EGR and ISC every time.
if the EGR leaks, the fast right foot can save a stall but is hard.
if the ISC sticks closed, saving the stall is piece of cake, super easy
after all , you are adding the missing air.

does that help,. no, then take it top the man, the ASE man.
The Mechanic.with the ASE patch on his /her sleeve.
no year, ouch.

2002 trailblazer starts then dies immediately

Usually a stalling problem in hot weather is caused by an electrical part getting overheated such as a coil or a relay, or a fuel problem.
I doubt the O2 sensor would cause it to stall that quick. And if a sensor fails it should turn on the warning light.
You might want to have the computer scanned for codes even tho the light has not come on.
How many times do you have to start it before it keeps running ? Will it stay running if you open the throttle ?

98 Corolla stalls or stumbles when cold

It sounds like you may have picked up some small debris from the bottom of the gas tank when you ran it empty. You may need to run a fuel/injector cleaning solution through the next tank of gas to clear the debris and consider changing your fuel filter too. Sea Foam is a great fuel additive and I recomment trying it full strength. Hope this helps!

I resently put gas in my truck and when I pulled

Might have got some water in the fuel tank, might have fueled with diesel accidentally, might be unrelated to fueling. I would start with a new fuel filter.

1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Stalls out, engine quits running

since its a 1997 your jeep has EFI, electronic fuel injection. The most probable reason for your troubles would be the injectors or a problem with the computer controling them, not allowing enough gas to be pushed into the cylinder causing stalling or lack of power, also too much gas iin the cylinder can lead to back firing and stalling. This would also explain the reason it takes so long to start back up some times, all the excess gas in the cylinder is flooding the motor and u have to wait till the gas disipates till the engine will turn over.
