Hi fisics,
I believe that corroded terminals in the light cluster can cause the warning light to come on.

But I once read that there is something else, entirely unrelated to the indicators themselves, that can cause this warning. Possibly another system powered through the same fuse or relay...When I remember what it is I will get back to you. It's pretty late here in Scotland. :-)

Cheers, D.

    Hi fisics,

I don't have a wiring diagram I'm afraid. I believe they are available in electronic form, but they're not cheap!

If you can get access to the on-board diagnostic system it might help. This can be either at a VW service place or you can get a cheap interface cable and download a free version of the VAG software to run on a laptop computer so you can do it yourself. This last course of action does require reasonable technical knowledge, which of course you may well have!

I still haven't remembered what other problem causes the system to throw an indicator failure warning :-( If I do I will get back and post another comment for you.

    Cheers, D.

Left turn signal lights are not working

In my case the left front turn indicator lamp worked, but not the left rear indicator, although all the lamps would turn on with running lights activated, as well as the backup light and 'night-light' mode. The left rear turn indicator would not work with the hazard lights activated. I tested the combination switch (this is the left/right turn indicator switch you use when driving to indicate which direction you are going and is mounted/located on the steering column) and it tested O.K.. I had good continuity from the combination switch black wire, and resistance on the blue-white wire from there to the left rear turn indicator lamp, as well as good continuity on all wires going out from the left parking light fuse. Since the Haynes manual indicated that the flasher module was probably good if it made the tell-tale clicking sound, I was feeling perplexed. So I took it into a local shop that specialized in auto electrics and it turned out to be the flasher module. I was under the impression that it operated in a straight-forward left-right manner, but apparently it has a different circuit for each turn indicator lamp. So even if it is making the appropriate clicking sound when the combo switch is flipped, it could still be the flasher module. Obviously the manual leaves a bit to be desired in the troubleshooting of malfunctioning turn indicators.

The warning light that looks like a car with lights coming from the rear indicates what? This light is just below the check engine light on the dash.

This warning light should indicate that there is a rear light failure. Running lights, brake lights, signal lights, reverse lights. You should check all the bulbs to see if any are burnt out.
