Car idles too high and dies

When I start my car it idles really high and when you give it gas it dies. I've checked lines/ hoses for holes and cracks for possible vacuum leaks but haven't found any. Help please!

I adjusted the idle screws and it still didn't help. The car starts up but if you don't give it any gas quickly it will die. Any ideas?

My accord also idles, way to high for about 10 min. After it kicks down the car runs fine but befor that its like the gas pedal is allthe way down. I've taken it to be repaired with no luck.

The later 80's accords have a problem with idling being to high at start up, even when the ambient air temp does not warrant it. I have had a 86 and now an 87 accord and both did that. I pretty much deal with it, being as you cant hardly replace indiv carb parts. Adjusting the idle will do nothing to stop it either. I took my 86 to a shop when I still had it and he fixed it, but I cant remember what all he did. I know he drilled a couple small holes in the choke plate. I think that the thermowax valve is bad, but again, you cannot find just a thermowax valve or anybody who knows what it is. Replacement carb in my area is about $450. Like I said, you might just have to learn to live with a high idle at start up.

Thats normal for it to idle high as its on cold start but if its way too high you need to adjust the idle screw

Hi, I have a 1994 BMW 318i Sunday morning I drove from Ontario to Palm Springs (home) with no problems but later that day my car stalled twice...I was able to restart it and off I went. Didn't have...

Could be many things, but the most likely problem based on the evidence and the age of the car is a cracked plastic air tube or rubber vacuum tube. You will need to examine the tubes that carry the air from your air filter through the mass air sensor and up to the throttle on the right side of the engine as you look at the engine from the front. Check for cracks in the rubber elbow that covers the throttle as well. If you cannot find any cracks, you or someone is going to have to start dismantling things, checking the bottoms of the tubes and the hoses to the idle air control valve for cracks. Look for any vacuum hoses that may be broken or split.

I have a 2002 Mercury Sable w/ 3.0L DOHC. The Fuel Cap light keeps on, yesterday the engine started idleing rough, today it acts like a stuck throttle until the car is stoped and then it acts like it...

You have a vacuum leak some where. Engine uses vacuum to burn gas vapors in gas tank. This is the EVAP SYSTEM. This system can detect a small leak or large leak. (gas cap light.) But there are also other items on the car that use vacuum to do work. The PCV circuit . This vents the engine's crank case. Also power brakes and some ac/heater controls. Now it sound like a good size vacuum leak if car idle is "high". I would say open the hood and listen. When car first starts idle should be around 1500 rpm or so. If you have a tachometer in car. then as it starts to warm up the idle should start to go down. Then listen for a hiss around the center of engine compartment. the black tube and ribs looking thing is your intake where vacuum ports would start. Check line or hoses to see if cracked or broken. Ford/Mercury like to use hard plastic for lines and become brittle after a while and break.

Idle is rough

it sounds like you have a vaccume leak , check all hoses that run to the throttlebody for cracks or holes, if you are losing vaccume than your car will run erratically , good luck.

It keeps dying like it is running out of gas and it is getting more and more frequent. It can barley idle now

Check your air intake hose. The hose may be cracked and letting to much air into the throttle body. The smaller the crack, you will have some issues....the larger the crack, the more air and then the car wont start...

Check your vacuum lines, make sure there is no leaks, and go from there, then all you electrical connection in the engine compartment.
I have a 1996 Jetta Trek Edition, the hoses, and wire harness, are so brittle, any movement can cause hoses and wire insulation to crack.

My car idle dips to low RPM at a stop i give it gas it dies

Is the engine light on? Check the air inlet hose between the throttle body & MAF sensor for cracks or leaks. Try unplugging the MAF & see if there is any difference
