Single core, 2 core, and 3 core radiators will all cool your vehicle, but something to consider before going to a larger radiator, is whether it will provide too much cooling capacity. This could be problematic during the winter months depending on where you live. Automotive cooling systems are carefully balanced to provide good cooling during the hottest months of the year, but also keep enough heat in the system to warm your passenger cabin during winter months.

2 and 3 core radiators often are used on higher performance motors, that may be creating more heat, and therefore require more cooling capacity.

If you are indeed needing to replace your radiator, I encourage you to use one that is sized similarly to the factory unit, unless you live in an extremely hot climate. You may want to consider using a product like RedLine Water Wetter in your coolant mix with the factory radiator. You may be able to find this product in your local autoparts store. It is a surfactant, that improves the cooling systems ability to shed heat, often by as much as 30 degrees, if I recall correctly.

Steps on removing and replacing radiator on my 1999 jeep cherokee sport 6 cyl. stright

Things You'll Need
  • Waste oil collection pan
  • Needle nose pliers
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Wrench set
  • Socket set
  • Antifreeze
  • Water
armor-all-tyn2.png
  1. Draining the Cooling System
    • 1 Locate the petcock valve on the lower right corner of the radiator and place a waste oil collection pan underneath it.
    • 2 Open the petcock valve by turning it counterclockwise, using needle nose pliers.
    • 3 Wait until all the coolant has drained out then close the petcock valve by turning it clockwise.
    Removing the Radiator
    • 1 Loosen the hose clamp that connects the upper radiator hose to the radiator using a Phillips head screwdriver. Then pull the upper radiator hose off the radiator.
    • 2 Loosen the hose clamp that connects the lower radiator hose to the radiator using a Phillips head screwdriver. Then pull the hose off the radiator.
    • 3 Unscrew the transmission cooler lines from the radiator (automatic transmission only) using a wrench.
    • 4 Unscrew the bolts that secure the radiator to the core support, using a socket.
    • 5 Lift the radiator straight up to remove it from the vehicle.
    Installing the Radiator
    • 1 Lower the radiator into position behind the core support. Be careful: the cooling fins are thin and can be easily damaged.
    • 2 Screw the bolts that secure the radiator into the core support. Tighten with a socket.
    • 3 Thread the transmission cooler line fittings into the radiator. Tighten with a wrench.
    • 4 Slide the lower radiator hose onto the fitting on the bottom of the radiator. Slide the hose clamp over the fitting and tighten with a Phillips head screwdriver.
    • 5 Slide the upper radiator hose onto the fitting on the top of the radiator. Slide the hose clamp over the fitting and tighten with a Phillips head screwdriver.
    • 6 Fill the engine with a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water.
    • 7 Run the engine and visually inspect for leaks.

Is the fan working properly? Is the radiator flowing correctly? Does the rad cap hold the proper pressure?

Getting no heat just cold air in my 1994 jeep cherokee XJ. I replaced the thermostat, heater valve and radiator still no heat.

reverse the hoses on the heater core and run water through them to see if the core is blocked if not blocked try changing the radiator cap so you have 16 or 18 pounds of pressure last make sure you have a 50 / 50 mix of antifreeze 50 water 50 antifreeze you should get heat

First I need to ask you, when you add 1/2 gallon each weekend, are you putting it in the radiator or reserve container.
Second, when you say it over heats and the reserve tank is always full,Is it clear full and coming out the fill lid.
heater cores can only block water going in to them,it could never cause an over heating problem.
you need to verify the basic system is working properly first.when it is running hot or you hear something different in the engine, what does your temp on the dash say,is it verifying over heating,or not.
the ECT switch is the eyes and ears for the computer,it tells the computer the engine is getting hot and then the computer turns on the radiator fans to cool it down.if the switch is lying or giving false info to the computer,it will never turn the fans on.if you take it to a shop they can test the whole system with a hand held computer and test each part of the system.

My 1994 jeep grand cherokee laredo is running hot

could be a lot of different things. bad heater core, cracked, ripped, or soft hoses, crack in the radiator, bad thermostat, clogged lines. next time you run the vehicle, try to see if you can see under the hood to see where the steam is coming from. that will help you to see if there is a bad line or hose. then try to flush the radiator to see if there is a clog in the lines. then go to get a new thermostat if none of those. then you get into the more expensive items the heater core and the radiator.
