Question about 1995 Toyota Corolla

1 Answer

Toyota corrolla,1.3 petrol 16v injection 1989

When travelling up hill sometimes the revs will go up without the car increasing speed accordingly, when changing inbetween gears during overtaking the revs will go up in the same way.I realise that this is classic signs of clutch slip but although the car is a K reg it has only got 53,000 miles on the clock and shouldnt need a clutch replacement yet! The other problem is the power steering has become heavy, could this be related?
many thanks,
Barney.

Sounds like one of two things first is to check condition of all drive belts if they are all good dont let the miles fool you if the car has been driven a bit harder or had alot of uphill driving these reduce clutch wear enormously

is transmission slipping? is it and automatic trans.? not stick shift.

slip means , engine RPM rises fast, but car speed does not.
some think that is power loss and is not. it's just slipping.
slip is transmission problems.
ok its not slip.:
which engine?
1.0 L G10 (LP2) I3
1.0 L G10T (LS3) turbo I3
1.3 L G13A/BA (L72) 8V I4

so saying my engine acts odd , is useless with out knowing what engine is there.....see why?

ill then answer for generic engines. GAS or Petrol.
  1. never tuned up the engine in a decade, tops list.!
  2. bad fuel,
  3. weak spark or #1 caused.
  4. cam belt slipped do to no service, (or chain on cam)
  5. Low fuel pressure
  6. or too much fuel pressure ,floods or rich misfires.
  7. misfire. causes low power ., lots of causes. over 50, in fact.
  8. The CLuster Check engine light on? running?
  9. Scan the PCM yet to see if it has DTCs; errors to report?
there are steps or tests in each case.
why not get the car serviced. they will do those tests.

When i start my toyota corolla small body in the morning, the idling goes up to 2000rpm, why is that so?

It is quite common for most cars to have an increased rev range when a engine is started from cold, as the temperature increases the revs will drop down.
Depending on the age of the car has a lot to do with it also, as older cars used an auto choke system until a warmer temperature was attained.
More modern cars don't neccessarily need extreme higher revs, but still operate with a thermostatic controller, that regulates the fuel flow via the fuel injection system.
before you do anything, consider
1/ You have to know also what rev range does the car operate at when its been running for a while, eg when its warm and idling does it rev at 600,800,1000.
2/ Make sure you don't have your air conditioner on when starting, as this increases revs also.
3/ How long is the increased revs lasting.
4/ Is this car a carburated model or fuel injection
5/ have a visual and check that there are no small vacuum pipes that have come off anywhere around the intake area of the motor. (Intake area can be found where you accelorator cable ends up.
6/ failing that when your car goes for its next service, bring this problem to the mechanics attention.
it can be difficult to diagnose problems like these unless your looking at the engine.

I hope this has helped somewhat

My corolla 1992 car with injection run rough when hot and sometimes goes off. when i increase the idle speed it rev more and does nit go off

Check or replace your computer box. There might be a problem with idling circuit or with one of its sensors in the engine and exhaust.

Losing power going over hill

well i think the piston ring are already loose, causing insufficient air compression leading to lower power especially on uphill tracks. check also for the air-fuel ratio! too much fuel usually is the cause for thick smoke emission; too much air, causes also less power.

Performance issue

Did you check the ignition timing of the engine before you fire it up? Increase in temperature with increase in load is usually caused by retarted ignition timing.
