Problem engaging 1st gear!!!

Hi there , i have a 1998 S Reg vw golf 1.6se manual . When we got the car we had a problem where it would nt engage 1st or 2nd gear without a lot of force. Had a mechanic look at it who said the clutch was worn which would explain it if the clutch wasnt releasing properly . After parting with £350 we still have the same problem , although it is easier to engage it is still very diffficult. Looking though the history it had a new gearbox and clutch in 2007. Phoned the garage that carried out the work who said they couldnt find what the problem was and advised the customer to sell the car which they did to old muggins here!!!!! Any help on the subject would be appreciated :-)

Hi, I have a vw golf 2003 2L sport 5speed manual. It doesn't shift into 1st gear; what could be the problem?

The problem is the 1st gear synchronizer damaged. You need to replace it with new one. For this operation you need to remove the gearbox out from the car, then dismounting the gearbox, and replace the 1st gear synchronizer.

Vw drivers door wont close

Hi! Do you mean that when you push the door to close it won't engage? If this is the case, please get a philips screw driver and slide it to the door grabber to rotate. It may be stuck causing it not to engage on the door striker. Hope this helps and thank you for using FIxYa!

I have a vw golf gti. P reg 1996. recently it has

Hi Frank
If as you say....Nothing is happening at all when you turn the key, you appear to have one of two problems. A faulty starter motor--or--- A faulty ignition switch. If you can tap the starter motor while another person keeps the key turned to the start position, and the engine now starts you now know it is a starter problem. When doing this PLEASE MAKE SURE THE VEHICLE IS OUT OF GEAR.
If it should start up, or even engage the starter motor while IN GEAR, serious injuries could happen, and I do not mean to your car.
Good luck

VW GOLF 1.4 1999 S. Gearbox makes whining sound at idle. once clutch is pressed sound goes. car drives fine with no noise in 1st-4th gears. unable to select 5th gear.. just grinds and wont engage. VW Golf...

No good news on this one I think
Your whining sound problem is the Layshaft bearings in the gearbox are badly worn. It also seems that the baulk rings are damaged on 5th gear.

I have a 2003 vw golf gt tdi 130 6 speed and have lost 1st and 2nd gear. I have checked the cables and they are working fine, the selector is moving but the gears are not engageing.

CHECK CLUTCH CABLE! IF CABLES IS LOOSE YOU COULD HARDLY ENGAGE 1ST AND 2ND GEAR.
IF YOUR CAR IS USING CLUTCH CABLE, ADJUST IT
IF IT USES FLUID, CHECK THE RUBBER CAPS.
