My 96 Cougar has a check engine light on. Took it to Auto Zone and they said problem was P1443 - Problem with the EVAP purge flow system. Previous owner said it was the return line from gas tank. I do not know where this censor is located or what the problem may be. Have been told it was a hose with a crack in it. Don't know where to start. Car run great. Any help would be appreciated. Thank You.

i had it checked by a mechanic on the computer they said the engine is fine they checked it all the codes etc they indicated it might be the gas cap so i changed it. the problem was ok for a week now the engine light just came on again its killen me they said it was saying air flow into the engine but tried all they can to resolve it and saw nothing wrong what can this be??? i also noticed that when i fill up for gas the little metal thing inside the gas line is pushed inwards can that be the problem ???

ever since i got the car, almost 2 years ago, the check engine light has been on. the prev. owner said it was an o2 sensor. adn from what it sounds like from the other posts, this sounds like the same problem...

  • Anonymous Feb 03, 2009

I just got the car from some one, and they said the engine light has been on for about two years, and the he has taken it to two repair shops and both of them can not read the OBDll. I also checked the vac, and it is reading 17in steady. No smokeing or ruff idle, but the brakes feel funny. If I do a hard stop, it will not brake hard, but it only slows fast. Could it be a vac leak in a hose? This could be the root of the problem for the Check engine light and low vac.

Ok i have the same make and model car.And had same problem but i was only needing new hoses. thwe code reader will not tell you if they are bad you just have to check this. The purge valve and canister is located under hood on passenger side behind bumper. look behind the light through the openings. You have to raise car up and do the repairs from under the bottom of the bumper. On passenger side under hood above the wheel fender and between the engine you will see a emmision line about the size of a pencil leads to the purge valve. the valve cost about $18.00 and canister cost around $75.00 at auto zone. The canister is the square box and sometimes you can take apart and clean it and put back together and it should work fine.

Trouble shooting p1443
definition:
evap canister purge valve mechanical fault or vmv fault condition
explanation:
ecm detected a fuel tank pressure change greater than a minus 7 inches of h2o in 30 seconds with purge less the 0.02 lbs. per minute
probable causes
1.failed EVAP pressure sensor
2.blocked hose between purge valve and FTP sensor
3.evap purge valve stuck closed

Check enging is on---OBD code is PO171 & p1443---how do i fixed this problem

The most likely cause of these two codes tripping together is a vacuum leak associated with the canister purge system. This system collects the vented gasoline vapor from the fuel tank and when the engine is running purges the canister into the manifold.

The P0171 is an indication that the engine is running lean and the P1443 is a fault associated with the Purge Control Valve Solenoid trouble code control valve.

Inspect under the hood for a disconnect vacuum line.

The photos are examples of the vacuum circuit connect via hoses. Listen for a vacuum leak when the engine is running. It would be a whistle sound. Also if work has been done recently look in the area that the work was done under the hood.

What does Evap pressure sensor failure means. ihave 97 ford escort, 94,000 miles

Hi Vanessa,

Diagnostic Test Code (DTC) P1443 has a "generic" description of "Very Small Or No Purge Flow Condition"
To put it very simply, the Powertrain Control Mdule (PCM) is commanding the Canister Purge (CANP) solenoid to open and purge the fuel vapors from your charcoal canister and fuel tank. Then it "looks" at data from the Purge Flow (PF) sensor to see if if the CANP solenoid complied with its command. This is not occuring as it should. (see the picture below to see how all these parts work together)

Here is a list of the possible causes of this code:
> Leaks in fuel tank, filler cap or vapor hoses
> Wiring harness circuits (CANP SIG, PF, PWR GND, VMV and VPWR)
> Faulty Canister Purge (CANP) solenoid
> Faulty Purge Flow (PF) sensor
> Faulty Vapor Management Valve (VMV)
> Faulty carbon canister
> Faulty PCM
The system must be diagnosed to find out which parts of the system are functioning correctly and which are not, so the fault can be found. The computer only knows that the data from the PF sensor is not what it should be - it does not know WHY.

Check engine lite came on code is p1443 what does this code mean

P1443 Evaporative Emission Control System Control Valve The Evaporative Emission Control System monitors the fuel vapor flow between the engine intake manifold and the EVAP canister. The system failure occurs when a leak or blockage between the intake manifold, the EVAP canister purge valve and the EVAP canister is detected by the PCM.

Code P1443 Possible Causes:

- Pinched, blocked or plugged fuel vapor tubes/hoses (except between fuel tank and EVAP canister)

- Damaged EVAP canister

- Disconnected, cracked or cut fuel vapor tubes/hoses (except between fuel tank and EVAP canister)

- Damaged EVAP canister purge valve

Has a whistling noise coming from fuel tank. check engine light on. the code is p1443. why is it whistling?

It is whistling because there is pressure buildup in the gastank. The pressure relief valve is probably plugged up and malfunctioning. With incorrect pressure in the fuel system, the check engine light is being triggered. The code p1443 is reguarding the Evaporative Emmissions Control System. Hope this helps good luck.

P1443 code How do I fix this code problem on my 97 Ford ranger?

P1443 is the Evaporative Emission Control System Control Valve. Any time you get this code always check your gas cap. If it is not installed all the way, or leaks, it can cause the evap emission code to come up. If the cap is okay...

The problem is probably caused by the Canister Purge Assembly. This assembly connects the intake manifold to the charcoal canister and the assembly is made up of hoses, a valve and a sensor. On the 1997 Ranger, it is located near the front of the engine compartment on the driver's side (the canister is right behind the driver's side headlight). Apparently, if there are any cracks in the hoses, or if the valve or the sensor wears out, this will cause the check engine light to come on, and return the P1443 code.

Part numbers for the canister purge solenoid/flow sensor assemblies:

F57Z-9C987-AB Canister Purge Solenoid/Flow Sensor
Assembly - 2.3L F57Z-9C987-CA Canister Purge Solenoid/Flow Sensor
Assembly - 3.0L F57Z-9C87-BA Canister Purge Solenoid/Flow Sensor
Assembly - 4.0L

Part cost = $65 to $100 depending on engine size - good luck :O)

Ford escort wagon 1997 code p1443 displayed. what does this indicate & where is the cannister? thank you.

P1443 - EVAP Control System / Vacuum System Purge Control Solenoid Or Purge Control Valve Fault. A fuel tank pressure change greater than minus (-) 7 inches of water in 30 seconds occurred with a purge (fuel vapor) flow at less than 0.02 pounds per minute.

Possible Causes:
  • Blocked fuel vapor hose between the EVAP canister purge valve and the FTP sensor.
  • Blocked fuel vapor hose between the EVAP canister purge valve and the engine intake manifold.
  • Blocked vacuum hose between the EVAP canister purge valve solenoid and the engine intake manifold.
  • EVAP canister purge valve stuck closed (mechanically).

  • Possible Solution:
Check for blockages between the fuel tank, the EVAP canister purge valve, and the engine intake manifold. Check for obstructions in the EVAP canister purge valve diaphragm and ports.

The canister is on the passengers side near the firewall if I recall correctly.
