Targa Top Hi, Is it possible for me to turn my 1987 Supra hard top into a targa top? Gary

Hello, My name is mike. I will be your mechanic today.

Here is what I believe is happening. When your top is on and your driving down the road, you do not notice it is shaking, but it is. Aerodynamics take over when top is on. This is common with convertibles and split tops and full targa tops. he shake your feeling with top off, is drag pull by the wind instead of going over top is looping around and hitting some on back inside window which cause drag. Like A semi trailer that does not have a big scope on tractor or trailer.

Now that being said, as said earlier it has probably always been there, but gets worse and more noticeable with top is removed. There is a couple things that you should look at to solve this shake issue. And IF you have Les Swab they can inspect these areas for FREE. Tires need to be looked at for proper air pressure, uneven tire ware, and breaks as well.. At same time have them look at (which they will automatically, once you tell them symptom) is stuts,shocks, ball joints and other front alignment issues. I will not get all technical on you, but there is a lot of different things that can cause this, and best to have them look at it for FREE and they can dissect it down.

Now, possible bad news but possible. Sometimes shakes will get worse (like i said it has always been there, just was not noticed until top is removed) is another area, if les swab does not find anything, it drive line, u joints and transmission. Mostly the drive line if not tight, with extra wind drag, could cause shake as it puts it under more stress. Les Swab and look at your drive line and joints, however if is anything transmission related (which I doubt) they do not deal with transmissions. Please Keep me informed. Mike

remove targa top look where the viser arms go up youll see looks like a washer with slots gently pry up on washer till it pops up pull viser down

No it does not matter.In 1987-89 Porsche have relocated the 3rd stop light up from bottom that is all.

do not recommend it. car is built as a coupe. theroof acts as a support, if u cut it out car will flex and move in ways it is not designed.. targa are built and the structure intgerity are designed to remove the top not a coupe

i believe that piece would be fiberglass with a coating of good quality acrylic paint. be that as it may if you are handy with fiberglass you should be able to repair it yourself. if not just about any body shop should be able to do the repair. get estimates from a few places first.

How to guide, all you need are about 10 rubber washers, (around a dollar) and some sockets. Shouldn't take more than an hour!

you might be better off with a repair manual but you wil only be able to find owner's manual from dealer or posbly ebay

Could be coming in from many places. Hole in the floor, firewall... The most common place for a leak is around the windshield, especially if it has already been replaced and not properly sealed.
