well the fan still works so it should be ok, sounds like you might have just a switch that shorted out. even though they go bad you might have some functionality i would replace that first

Burnt relay or coil, listen for-and follow the clicking when you change fan speeds it'll lead you to your relays. Also look for burnt connectors.
