CAR WON'T START OR TURN OVER, AFTER IT SITS FOR A WHILE IT STARTS UP, HAVE HAD THE BATTERY COMPLETLY CHECK OUT

  • scottmac003 Jul 26, 2008

I experienced the same problem last night....I drove the car several miles, turned the car off, and when I returned several minutes later, it would not turn over. The starter solenoid is not even clicking. I checked the battery, and it is good. All accessories are running (headlights, A/C fan, power windows, etc.), so the battery has plenty of juice.

On 11/5/08 after work made errands on three stops. On the last stop the car won't start in the manner as you have described. Turn the key, lights dim no sound from starter. Tried rocking the car. Tried in neutral. Tried several times gave up. Walked home came back after 2 hours. Tried it again - no start. Tried it one more time car started. Drove it home and ran a few test with a electrical diagnostic tool while motor is still running. Alternator ok. Battery ok. Turn off car. Waited a little and try starting it up again. Won't start. Orig ALT and BAT on a 2000 Impala. Starter has been repl for a similar problem before 1.5yrs ago. Just out of warr. Suspect the following: bad starter again, battery too old, neutral safty switch, or ignition sw.

I also have the same problem, every once in a while I turn the key and nothing the engine will not turn over. and after 10 minutes or so it starts. Then on a different time my security light came on while driving.... I spoke with a chev dealer to get a price on replacing the lock cylinder and was told they would have to run a diagnostic first but could run around eight hundred... any advice?

Does a light come on that looks like a lock?? This is GMs Passlock problem. It a fault in the ignition cylinder. The car won`t turn over. If you remove the key, the car will start in 8 to 10 minutes. Some have found that spraying an electronic spray or silicone based spray in the ignition and rapidly turning the key back and forth may help. Repeat this several times. Replacing the ignition switch is an expensive option, but may have to be done.

Security. Turn the key to run. Let it sit for ten minutes, off for thirty seconds. Then try to start. Do this three times for a relearn. Don't try to start.

Car was rinning perfect. One day it would not start. there was nothing, no clicking ,bell and guages were working. Jump start was nothing. Installed a new battery there was nothing. Went bact back 2 hours...

It sounds like you have an issue with your PassLock security system. I had the same with my 2002 Impala. Key turns OK, but won't start, won't crank. Wait 20-30 minutes, and car starts normally. There is usually a clue from the Battery and Security lights.
The problem starting to happen once a month, and eventually 1-2 times a week.
There are several write-ups on this problem for several GM cars for 2000-2006(?). Search this website, and search the web.
The official solution is to replace the ignition switch. The best solution is to bypass the Pass Lock system. I went ahead and did a full bypass, which involves cutting wires and adding resistors to the ignition circuit. I have not had a problem since.

Starting for 1999 Saturn SC

I had a similar problem. My 99 Saturn SL1 would crank and crank but would not start. I'd step on the gas repeatedly when it seemed like it was about to start. I got a new battery, alternator, complete tune up and nothing helped. As an aside, my flunked the emissions test and I had to go to a shop and have it hooked up to a computer for diagnosis. They found many things wrong and I ended up changing the oxygen sensor and the catalitic converter because the mechanic said that these were the most important things to fix so that the car could pass the emissions test. My car passed the emissions test Also I no longer had problems with starting the car. Replace your oxygen sensor.

2002 impala intermitenly wont start

I would clean the battery connecters or possibly change them. How old is the battery? sometimes when battery get old, they have enough juice to crank the motor but not enough to start it..But then again, if it doesn't crank at all sometimes, it could certainly be a bad or loose battery terminals..Start with this since its the simplest and easiest and could very well be your problem. hope this helps

How do i reset the security system on my 2003 chevy impala

Are you reffering to the alarm or the pass lock system that put the theft light on.....If its the alarm the put the key in the door and unlock it. If its the pass lock system put the key in the ignition and turn it on and try to start the vehicle. After it shuts itself off leave the key on for ten min until the theft light stops flashing the turn key off and try to start it again. This may take a few times....

2000 Impala:Hard start and couple times Idles extremly high

The car has OBD2 technology, You wont be able to tell without special tools. The ignition components, timing, CKP & CMP sensor, fuel line pressure, misfires, and fuel quality all need to be looked at. But to answer your question, "over 3x cranking' could be timing or fuel pressure. A bad IAC would cause a rough idle, and if the injectors were bad then it would cause a misfire too.
