Re: CTS CODE PO420
Most of the time its the sensor that cause this,id try replacing the
sensor on it,that usually fixes that code, but you have to get the code
cleared off with a scanner ,and then re-scan it to make sure it doesn't
come up again, good luck with it.

In almost all cases, a P0420 code indicates a problem with 1 or more O2 sensors. They send incorrect emissions information back to the ECM and trigger the Check Engine Light. If the Catalytic Converter is fine (no problems with the engine hesitating or getting a lot of heat from under the car) then it's most likely the O2's.
If the code has cleared on its own then you need to disconnect the battery and re-connect it. This will clear the codes out of the memory. If you don't want to do this you can go to an auto parts strore and have them hook the little computer up to your car and they can clear out the code as well.
Check out this website www.repairpal.com and it will give you a range of what you should expect to pay to get your thermostat and cabin air filter replaced. As far as the check engine light goes, I wouldn't pay for a mechanic to check it before you go to AutoZone and have them check it for you. They will read the code for you and then you can look the code up here http://www.2carpros.com/kpages/diagnostic_trouble_codes.htm to see what it is. Once you know the code we can work on what you will need to have fixed so you can know how much to expect to pay to fix whatever is setting off your check engine light. Catalyst Effeciancy below threshold (Bank 1) is the code meaning. Check or replace the oxygen sensors. Some cars have 2 .One is on the front of the cat. the other is the on the back. Check the back sensor . Other possible causes are leaking or damaged exhaust manifold, bad coolant temp sensor. If toyota did not replace both . replace the one on the back of the Caty.
