2000 golf GTI problem, misfiring when idol

On and off since Feb 08, approx every 6 weeks, it starts misfiring and smelling of stale eggs! It's had it's plugs changed, changed again after 6 weeks plus leads changing that lead to it. Coil pack checked, new one made no difference, old one put back on. Plugs clogged with fuel again on 6th June, cleaned, lamber sensor replaced, 29th June, just started misfiring/shaking when idol and smelling again.............HELP??

If it is hydrogen sulphide it could be coming from an overcharging battery, but in view of the misfire it sounds more like an over-rich fuel mixture could be fouling up your catalytic converter. Best course of action is to get a proper diagnosis at your garage or if you are technically minded you can buy a cheap interface cable and download free VAG diagnostic software and then do it yourself.
Hope this helps! D.

HEY THERE. MY 1986 GOLF 2 GTI DRIVES FINE FOR A FEW DAYS AND SUDDENLY STARTS MISFIRING AND THEN CUTS OUT.AFTER THAT IT WILL START WITH DIFFICULTY AND NOT REV UP...PLEASE HELP ME AS I HAVE REPLACED THE FUEL...

Did you check timing 6*btdc? Could be bad fuel distributor. Misfire is either a problem with fuel delivery or ignition (spark). If you can't find or fix the problem you'll ruin your catalytic converter.

I own a 1995 volkswagon golf gti and have noticed a smell of rotten eggs when i turn the heater on! what is causing it??

Sounds like the catalytic converter is leaking and not sending the fumes out through the exhaust although will get a meyhane smell from time to time especialy when your engine braking towards a stop light or give way.

Did you resolve this?
I drive a mk3 golf GTI 8V and mine starts fine but after driving for about 3 minutes (engine warms up) it starts to misfire, the car stalls and then you can't start it again until the engine has cooled. Does this sound similar?

Rotten egg smell after new plugs and wires seems to miss now

did he gap the plugs properly? sulfur smell comes from excess fuel being dumped into the exhaust (catalytic converter). Could be the coil, or improperly gapped plugs. If the wires were out of order, there would be a misfire.
