2004 Ford F550 Super Duty A/C Problem

Hello, I am a Contract Firefighter in Al Taqaddum, Iraq working on a Marine Post. We have a 2004 Ford F550 Super Duty, it is a Brush rig, although used as a support vehicle. The problem is, well it is hotter than haties here, the a/c put out some pretty cold air but the major problem is that even on MAX output the air coming out is minimal. Half the time you wonder if you would just be better off opening the window, even if it is 120 degrees outside! We have major dust storms here, so I am thinking that it may be that the ducting is just so full of dust that it cannot perform as designed. I know some later model vehicles have air filters that can be changed out, could this be the problem? I would be a hero around here if I could get this a/c working in an acceptable manner. Thanks so much for any assistance you might provide.

Sir, I appreciate your quick response! I am not a mechanic so I'll need more specific info in regards to accessing the filter (where is it, is it in the the cab under the dash, is it easily accessable?) . Getting to the blower area, simple or complex? I think the best route would be to change out the filter first and go on from there... Also, where would be the best place to find the filter replacement?

    Thanks, Paul

It could be the fan, but I still think that there is a good chance that it may just need a filter change and the ducting cleaned, maybe a bit of lube on the fan. I need to know how to get to the filter, can someone tell me how? Or where to go (internet site, perhaps?)?

2004 Ford F550 Super Duty A/C Problem - fca9e5d.gifRemoving the filter is a very easy task. Refer to the pic above.
The rod should have 2 holes in it, the one towards the middle of the rod should be hooked onto the dash panel to the right of the glovebox. Just unscrew the rod from the glovebox, pull the glovebox down (to disconnect the latch where you circled the red areas) and you'll see a small protrusion where the hole on the rod should go.

Would you be interested in purchasing the service manual for your vehicle. They usually only run around a 100$, depending on if you can find a used one or not. Then it is a factory service manual that tells you every nut and bolt on your truck. I can locate your manual if you are interested in that route.
Keep me updated.
Thanks,
Lee

How do you know there is an A/C filter? I can't find anything to suggest that. Take out the blower motor and see what that looks like.
    Thanks,
    Lee

The first thing to check would be the fan, Does it sound like it is blowing harder when you turn it up, you should be able to hear it slightly. It may just be going bad and needing replacement. Let me know what you think about this as it is the best option to look at for your problem, also, does the air still feel cold?

Hi,
According to the specs it's a large flat panel of pleated paper located under the dashboard.

As it's around 12" square, it will be located in the main air ducting very close to the fan unit- usually in a clipped together enclosure - look for metal clips as fords tend to use these.

I'll see if I can find more details for you.

If you can find a stockist of FRAM filters, this list is their reference numbers that suit your vehicle (I'd print it out as it has a lot of other service parts on there too).....Clicky

Fram produce a washable filter - so just wash and go! - good for 20x use

If you know of stockists of other makes, I can find the cross ref for you.

As another thought, sometimes if the fan is playing up, it's the resistor in the air ducting that gives problems (will only blow full - nothing else)

You may get a build up of fine dust on the fanblades themselves, as it tends to cake on in extremes.

If you haven't fitted a snorkle to your truck, it may be a good idea with a centrifugal intake to drop out the dust.

The only thing which you can do is clean the blower and check the inlet filter which all the cars and vehicles has.
