02 PT Radiator Fan Stops Working Intermittently - Car Overheats

02 Non-Turbo - Radiator fans is not coming on as it should, which results in the car overheating. This has been a lingering problem over the years. I have replaced the radiator, relays, fuses. Is this a systemic problem with PT's?

I heed the problem fixed before I give this car to my daughter for college.

I just drove my 2002 PT Cruiser 20 miles after buying it and after overheating the green coolant came out all over the ground. The oil looks clean. The temp. gauge in the car did not show it getting hot. What do I need to do to fix the overheating problem?
    Thank you,

fan is not worlking and car is overheating! what do i do?

  • htbeaudet May 12, 2009

I have a 2002 Cruiser that just recently started overheating when sitting idle. I flushed the radiator and replaced the thermostat and added all new coolant. Still, it overheats. I did notice that the fan comes on when the air is turned on but I'm now questioning if the fan isn't working all the time?? Someone suggested wiring it so the fan starts when the car starts and turning off when the engine is shut off but I have no clue where to start. All help is appreciated. Unless you think it could be something else, all suggestions are appreciated as well. Thanks!!

Cooling fan only works intermittently- have replaced fan motor, ECT sensor, radiator cap, thermostat, flushed the radiator and it is STILL overheating.

I had the same problem and researched it and found 1000's of other people having the same problem and spending lots of money replacing water pumps, radiators, thermostats, switches, relays,,, etc. What I did was check the cooling fan with 12 volts and found 1 speed doesn't work. I wired the fan so it comes on when the key is turned on and goes off when you turn the key off. The a/c is cooler than it has been in 3-4 years. The temp guage goes to right under half and it doesnt matter if you sit and idle or drive the interstate the temp stays the same and the a/c will run you out of the car. Fixed for less than $5.00.

It could be a fan motor that is failing or maybe just the fan module relay. the relay can be bought at any dealer or auto parts store for anywhere from $20 aftermarket to $90 dealer price. I have seen this many times to think it is another water pump or t-stat. I would suggest the relay. When the relay has gone out then you can still hot wire the fan to working all the time the vehicle is running. With a new relay it will shut off like it is supposed to and run when it is supposed to to prevent overheating. The relay itself may be the problem but it has been known for the whole fan module to go out as well with the relay also. Call your local dealer and ask them to run your VIN # to see if they have a RECALL for this problem before buying anything. I know on a lot of Chrysler products there is a fan recall and the fan relay recall. If your vehicle has these recalls then all it will cost you is your time and gas to get there. Hopefully this helps you.

Radiator fan on my 2001 pt cruiser only engages when the air conditioner is on. When the heat is on the fan doesn't work causing the car to overheat. Do I need a new fan?

probably not . There are fuses to check and a relay to check as well as the coolant temperature sensor to check . If the engine overheats when you have the heater on it suggests an air lock in the cooling system . Have the system pressure bled along with all the other checks.

Engine light came on and car is over heating. Took it to auto zone and was told it's the fan relay. Its a 2003 PT Cruiser, Turbo. I opened the fuse box under hood. There are 3 spots for relays in there...

Turbo Radiator Fan

The radiator cooling fan is a variable speed electric motor driven fan. The radiator fan assembly includes an electric motor, fan blade, and a support shroud that is attached to the radiator. The radiator fan is serviced as an assembly (fan motor/fan/shroud).

The variable speed radiator fan is controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) by way of a Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) signal. The duty cycle ranges from 30% for low speed operation then ramps-up to 100% for high-speed operation. This fan control system provides infinitely variable fan speeds, allowing for improved fan noise, A/C performance, better engine cooling, and additional vehicle power.

To control radiator fan operation, the PCM looks at inputs from:

Engine coolant temperature
A/C pressure transducer
Ambient temperature
Vehicle speed
Transmission oil temperature (automatic transmission only

HENCE CHECK THE PCM

My honda civic 1999 sir overheats when I turn on the air con.

If your car is getting Overheat when you turn the air conditioner On, it means that you need to repair your compressor or it will need to be replaced.

It could also be that if your car has a 2nd or separate radiator fan that should come on when the car is either hot OR when the A/C is on - perhaps it is NOT coming on and thus your car overheats. If your car does have a 2nd fan, check to see if it is coming on when you turn on your air conditioner.

Also, I would check that your radiator fan is on (even if it has only one electric fan) when the car temperature is getting near the HOT zone. At some point, the fan should come on to help circulate the air through the radiator vents and help cool the coolant (water) in the radiator.

In short, make sure your fan(s) are working okay. If not, that could be causing your car to overheat too.

Tell us news (remember rated this).
