Could you tell me where the coolant temperature sensor is located on a 2001 kia optima (V6)?

  • Anonymous Dec 09, 2010

I have been having problms with the car for about two weeks.
Out of the blue, it will rev high, and wouldn't restart after I shut the car off.
The check engine light would come on right before this would happen, but, the car wouldn't show as overheating.
I had it put on diagnostics and the code for the temp sensor came up.
After this happened, the mechanic reset the computer for me. It ran fine the next day.
It drove fine for about a week. Then I had problems after that starting it - after running the car about 5 mile. I went to get gas, turned the car off, and then it wouldn't start.
After cranking it 5 times, it started.
I got the sensor but I wasn't sure where to install it, a friend is going to install it instead of paying the mechanic for something so small of a task.
I was told to replace the sensor and that it was causing the problems with the restarting and the revving. I hope this takes care of my problem.
Someone else had said to change the thermestatt also? What do you think??
    Thank you
    Susan

Grab the top radiator hose, follow it to the engine, where it meets the engine is where the sensor is.

    Hi Susan

Dont bother with the thermostat, just try the sensor but ensure you change the water sensor for the ECU (there is one for the dash gauge and one that controls the ECU fuelling / choke)

If you require more info feel free to ask me

Sarah, The Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor on your Kia is located below rad hose driver side by exhaust manifold. May be a good time to flush coolant system when changing sensor.
Check the attached links, instruction and guides, Good luck

I have a Kia Optima 2002. I needed to replace the coolant temp. sensor. Where on a diagram, of the motor, v6, will I locate the sensor?

Depending on what car/ model you have, there may be 2 sensors on the engine. I don't honestly know about your particular vehicle.

However, you needn't rely on a wiring diagram to find it as they are very easily located.
Below is an image of a coolant sensor temperature. Yours will look pretty much like the one in the photo.
25929734-llkdp3pjxd1sy1nazmdezhqo-2-0.jpg To find it, open the bonnet/hood of your car and look at the cooling system. Somewhere, in the area of the thermostat (there'll probably be a wide-bore water hose in the vicinity) you'll find it. It screws into the metal of the thermostat/cylinder head area, and connects via that black connector to a connector on the wiring harness. It should be quite easy to see.

The job of the coolant temperature sensor is to work in conjunction with other sensors, to control the fuel/air mixture combined with engine temperature.

Often, on vehicles such as the Jeep Grand Cherokee (which I have) an error message may appear on your display to say 'coolant temperature sensor bad'. In the case of the Jeep Grand Cherokee this is a known 'bug' - there's nothing actually wrong with the sensor. The Jeep runs fine ..it's a 'false error message'. An occasional bug.

Is your Kia running fine..? If it's not overheating and doesn't have starting/idling/running problems...

I think our 2001 Kia Optima has the same problem as the guy who's Kia shifts down to 2nd. Where can I find a repair book for a 2001 Kia so I know where the speed sensors are located? Our check engine light...

Seems you have 'MULTIPLE' possible causes for this problem. First of all, I'd have a mechanic (a smart one) check the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) first, Usually, the TPS does have a direct effect on trans shifting erratically. It's also used by the ECM (Engine Control Module) to calculate 'LOAD' and subsequently the Fuel Mapping (fuel to air ratio, ignition timing, etc) which could possibly create a RANDOM MISFIRE condition. This other description you have regarding 10 minutes - that one's wierd - could be a multitude of possible causes (i.e, fuel pressure not enough or too much, malfunction in the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor, malfunction in the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor. First things first - get the TPS checked - if found bad - replace it. Go from there.
