I have been having problms with the car for about two weeks. Out of the blue, it will rev high, and wouldn't restart after I shut the car off. The check engine light would come on right before this would happen, but, the car wouldn't show as overheating. I had it put on diagnostics and the code for the temp sensor came up. After this happened, the mechanic reset the computer for me. It ran fine the next day. It drove fine for about a week. Then I had problems after that starting it - after running the car about 5 mile. I went to get gas, turned the car off, and then it wouldn't start. After cranking it 5 times, it started. I got the sensor but I wasn't sure where to install it, a friend is going to install it instead of paying the mechanic for something so small of a task. I was told to replace the sensor and that it was causing the problems with the restarting and the revving. I hope this takes care of my problem. Someone else had said to change the thermestatt also? What do you think?? Thank you SusanI have been having problms with the car for about two weeks.

Dont bother with the thermostat, just try the sensor but ensure you change the water sensor for the ECU (there is one for the dash gauge and one that controls the ECU fuelling / choke)
If you require more info feel free to ask me

If you're finding it difficult to service/repair your car, get one of those online manuals. You'll not have to wait for others to answer, or rely on mechanics and all. Plus i know a website that has every info on all vehicles and vehicle problems, with their solution In detail.. it's
Sarah, The Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor on your Kia is located below rad hose driver side by exhaust manifold. May be a good time to flush coolant system when changing sensor.
Check the attached links, instruction and guides, Good luck
"I hope this helped you out, if so let me know by pressing the helpful button. Check out some of my other posts if you need more tips and info." How to Replace Lower Engine Coolant Sensor
Depending on what car/ model you have, there may be 2 sensors on the engine. I don't honestly know about your particular vehicle.
However, you needn't rely on a wiring diagram to find it as they are very easily located.
Below is an image of a coolant sensor temperature. Yours will look pretty much like the one in the photo.
To find it, open the bonnet/hood of your car and look at the cooling system. Somewhere, in the area of the thermostat (there'll probably be a wide-bore water hose in the vicinity) you'll find it. It screws into the metal of the thermostat/cylinder head area, and connects via that black connector to a connector on the wiring harness. It should be quite easy to see.
The job of the coolant temperature sensor is to work in conjunction with other sensors, to control the fuel/air mixture combined with engine temperature.
Often, on vehicles such as the Jeep Grand Cherokee (which I have) an error message may appear on your display to say 'coolant temperature sensor bad'. In the case of the Jeep Grand Cherokee this is a known 'bug' - there's nothing actually wrong with the sensor. The Jeep runs fine ..it's a 'false error message'. An occasional bug.
Is your Kia running fine..? If it's not overheating and doesn't have starting/idling/running problems...
these are the steps i found for a 2001 to 2005 you may have to research a bit to make sure they are the same for a 2006 most auto stores will be able to tell you this but make sure u get a second opinion just to be safe
There are two engines that could be in this car but the coolant temp sensor that sends the signal to computer is the coolant temp sensor located on the top rear of the engine.
Seems you have 'MULTIPLE' possible causes for this problem. First of all, I'd have a mechanic (a smart one) check the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) first, Usually, the TPS does have a direct effect on trans shifting erratically. It's also used by the ECM (Engine Control Module) to calculate 'LOAD' and subsequently the Fuel Mapping (fuel to air ratio, ignition timing, etc) which could possibly create a RANDOM MISFIRE condition. This other description you have regarding 10 minutes - that one's wierd - could be a multitude of possible causes (i.e, fuel pressure not enough or too much, malfunction in the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor, malfunction in the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor. First things first - get the TPS checked - if found bad - replace it. Go from there.
