My 2001 Ford Escape is noisy when I turn left or right. The PS reservoir is serviced. It's not hard to turn, just noisy. Replaced front shock strut bearings three months ago.

the part that you describe is the wheel alignment adjuster. If you have described it properly it will have 4 studs ,be in a rubber mount and have a bearing inside it and sits on top of the insert up in the inner guard. It should be allowed to spin freely when out of the vehicle. If it didn't then the bearing is probably faulty. That part is a replacement part and when faulty contributes to hard steering
Rear shocks are easy. The front struts are best left to a professional. You can remove the units and take them to the shop. As a option you can purchase assembled units but the are more costly. Step by step instructions for free:
The shocks in the rear just unbolt top and bottom, disconnect the air line and replace them.
Struts are used in the front. You'll need to remove them and then have a spring compressor to change the struts. An alignment check is recommended after the struts are replaced.

If the steering is getting a little hard to turn at low speeds, this would indicate a loss of Power Steering, and the steering is reverting to "Non-Power" steering, just like the days of the Ford Model T or Model A. Loss of power steering is usually caused by low level of PSF (Power Steering Fluid). So first on my checklist would be checking the PSF level in the reservoir. Also bleed (air) from PS (Power Steering) pump.
The Ford Five Hundred has front MacPherson struts, so check these for leakage (of the dampening fluid in the strut cylinder), or breakage of their coil springs. These springs can actually weaken over time, but this is impossible to see - you must "feel" it by bouncing the strut up & down - preferably with your hands on the top of the strut tower in the engine compartment (rather than on the exterior finish). If the MacPherson struts have weak/broken springs, these components are not separately serviceable, and the strut would have to be replaced as a unit (and preferably both left/right to maintain smooth/even ride).
The Five Hundred also has rear shock absorbers with springs - check for leaks/breakage/weakness here too.

I have a 2002 Escape V6. I had a squeak when turning... even when standing still. It was fairly low mileage: 40,000 miles?
It was the outer tie rod. You could feel it squeak in your hand while someone else turned the steering wheel.
I disconnected the tie rod. I wasn't worn, just squeaky. I squirted a little WD40 inside the boot, and worked it in. Reassembled and squeak gone.
I bought a replacement tie rod, but never had to put it on. I'm now at 110,000 miles.
On the S80, there should be two different types of struts for the front. One with a wire that comes out of the bottom of the strut and one that doesn't. If it has the wire...I'd recommend taking it to dealership. If it doesn't...I haven't heard any problems with aftermarket struts.
The C70 has struts on the front and shocks on the back. Most typical set up for most cars.
Does the brake light come on when making turns, braking, or accelerating?
If so, check your brake fluid reservoir. If it gets too low, it can slosh to one side away from the level sensor and causing the light to stay on for awhile. If the level is low...it's a good sign that your brake pads may need replacement.
