The most common problem on a Ford with these codes is deteriorated PCV hoses. Check the hoses from the PCV valve to the intake manifold. Pay special attention to the rubber elbows. They often crack on the inside curve and the crack is hard to see.

The intake manifold gaskets need replacement as well as the o-rings inside - if you call FORD they should be able to get you the correct parts.

SOURCE: check engine light

this is very common on these. the upper intake seals leak and should be replaced. It is not a noticable vacuum leak and is usually worse when the engine is cold. It is not a very difficult job to do

SOURCE: bank 1 too lean

ALL CARS fixes are guessing and hoping at best. 1st thing is it a 4 cylinder or a v6. if its a v6 and you have bank 1 lean but NOT bank 2 lean, then you are probably looking for a vacuum leak affecting only bank 1. Stuck injector will NOT ause this code without also setting a misfire code. Cars use fuel trim. Basically you have BASE FUEL which is the preprogrammed best fuel amount for each condition. FUEL TRIM is the result of when the o2 sensor analyzes how rich or lean the car was, then adjusts the fuel trim to compensate as needed. Most cars set a trouble code around +/-25% fuel trim. You really need look at datastream on a scantool and determine if BANK 2 is also lean and just not quite at code level (IE - Bank 1 is at 25% and set a code, Bank 2 is at 22% and did not). In this case, tream it as a problem that affects ALL CYLINDERS instead of a bank.
Now that the bank thing is settled, lets presume you have a 4 cylinder. As said before, vacuum leaks are a common cause and should be checked early on. There are many ways to do this, but the cheapest and easiest is open the hood and listen for the air whistling/sucking sound and follow it. Doesnt always work, but you may get lucky.

Step 1: Clear check engine light and delete all codes. This provides us with accurate information next time the ECM sends trouble codes.

Do all tests when car is acting up. Check fuel pressure. Check for spark, looking for strength also. Disconnect Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor and if sensor is good, you should notice a change. If there is no change, that can indicate a bad MAF.

The fuel pressure sounds too low. Is it multi-port injection? Check the fuel pressure against your specs for the car and engine. MPFI systems usually require 40-50 psi.

Get the codes that were saved when the "engine light" came on and post them here. (You can get them retrieved for free from Auto Zone).

I'm going to take real *wild* guess that somehow that rough spot you hit actually impacted the oxygen sensor and disconnected it or damaged it.

DTC = P0720
footnote b = MIL (malfunction indicator light) comes on after 2nd occurance
footnote c = tranny control indicator light (TCIL) flashes
circuit = OSS = output shaft speed sensor in the tranny (not the variable speed sensor (VSS) in the diff).
condition = OSS sensor circuit malfunction
probable causes = Short/open circuit, sensor, PCM

My guess? Replacing the OSS will take care of it. smile.gif I hope you don't have a faulty PCM. frown.gif

Truck starts but will not idle

IT COULD POSSIBLY BE THE INTAKE GASKETS. FORD HAS A PROBLEM WITH THE GASKETS GOING BAD. IF THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON AND GIVING YOU CODES PO171 AND PO174 I WOULD CHECK THE GASKETS BY SPRAYING CARB. CLEANER AROUND THE INTAKE WHILE THE ENGINE IS RUNNING. IF THE IDLE SPEEDS UP THEN THAT IS YOUR PROBLEM.
