Put key in ignition, but won't unlock

This has only happened a few times, but I will put my key in the ignition, but it won't turn, its like I'm not using the right key, or the car doesn't recognize it. Most of the time I can just retract it a bit and then push it in the ignition with a little more force, but this time, nothing is working. I don't want to have to tow it, once it starts it runs freat, but it just won't unlock, Help!

Sounds like either a bad key, or ignition assembly. When you look at the key is it bent, twisted or tweaked in any manner? If it is best advice I can give you is go to a dealer with your vin# and have a new key cut. If the is in good shape it's the ignition assembly itself, can be costly to replace. But it's gotta be on or the other. Any trouble with that key in the door locks?

Hope this helps

I put my car in park, but cannot turn key all way to left and cannot remove key. Is WD40 ok to use there? Any solutions to solve this problem? I can't get key out. Help please

What year/make/model car is it? Where is the shifter located, basically? It may not be the tumbler. The lock itself may be due to the steering wheel. It happens sometimes. Is the steering wheel locked into position, or can you still turn it? If it is too locked, try to unlock the wheel, by taking shifter out of park and back in, then try turning the steering wheel until it unlocks. When it does, the key should turn. I can give a better answer if I knew what car we're working with.

Tip

I removed the battery and now the car won't start

'I disconnected the car battery/changed the car battery and now my car won't start'

Another common question on Fixya.
You've done nothing wrong. It's simply that the immobiliser doesn't recognise the key.

Put the key into the ignition. Turn the ignition on. Press the LOCK button twice on your remote. Wait 1 minute.

Turn the ignition off and press the UNLOCK button on the remote a couple of times. This will disarm the immobiliser.

The key should be recognised and your vehicle will start.

1998 Plymouth grand voyager ignition won't turn

I have had this happen on my 98 Voyager. Just have a new key cut. This new key will sometimes cure the problem. The older keys get worn out and won't unlock the ignition. Try this before a much more expensive and time consuming change of the ignition.
