I have a 1987 Porsche 911 turbo and when the engine is at temperature the tachometer stops working except at idle. No performance issues noted. Any ideas?

Hello there
In the engine compartment is a multiplug(black) connector. If you can locate on the wireing harness which goes to it, black-purple wire. This end connection could be loose.Unplug the connector and inspect the end of this wire, then spray on wd40.Check all the connection at the gauge as well.

Thanks for the tips - the culprit ended up being a bad alternator that was sending out a dirty signal when it reached operating temperature. Tach is fine.

Where can a person get the documintation of how many cars & number of each type built for the 1987 Porsche 911 turbo look. Thank you James

There numerous books on the 911 that have all that information. Go to Barnes and Nobles and look through their titles, if that doesn't help, contact porsche north america public relations dept and they can look up your vin number and tell you how many had the same options.

How much oil does porsche 996 take 2004model twin turbo + if iv put 8.5 liters witch i did n it smoked n i drained it all out n added 4 then drove the car to clear the smoke witch it did has it damaged my...

The smoke is obviously a big indicator you have oil in the combustion chamber. On turbo motors it is likely coming from a leaking oil seal in the turbo housing itself. But there is a possibility of internal damage like a piston. Might want to run a compression test to eliminate any internal engine issues first, then focus back on the turbo oil seals.
