2002 VW TDI Glowplug light blinking

I have a 2002 VW Jetta TDI and the glowplug light blinks while I'm driving. At the same time, my brakes feel like their compressing, and I can smell hot brakes in the rear when I park. The parking brake is not on.

The glowplug light blinking is usually an indicator of a brake problem. The usual problem is a failed brake switch. VW has had a ton of problems with these. When it fails your brakes lights either stay on all the time or don't come on at all. If you have an automatic it prevents you from shifting out of park, but that can't be since you are still driving. Just get someone to check your lights when you step on and let off the brake pedal.

Does your car have ASR? The other solution says that the rear brakes can activate for motion control but this is only if you have ASR and then I believe the ASR only works on the front wheels since those are the drive wheels. I don't believe ESP was an option on 2002s. If your brake lights are on all the time your car could think you are trying to brake and the ABS could be kicking in.

If the brake switch is working you need to scan the car for the error code to narrow down the problem. Someone with VAG-COM or the dealer can pull the code.

If the brake light is sticking it is a recall issue and the dealer will fix it for free. A short term fix is to kick the pedal hard a few times to "loosen" it up (worked for me).

Thanks again but it's saying park break whenever I try to move it will move in I try to apply aloud noise

They might be two unrelated problems. I have a 2001 and have had two failures of the glowplug harness. The last time I had a constant light.

As far as the brakes go, the rear brakes are used for motion control. So if you drive it pretty hard the computer will be applying the brakes to keep traction or stability. I have had the same sensation of a soft break pedal from time to time but no real problem has poped up. I did have a master cylinder go way back when I first got the car in 2003. Have not had to replace that part again.

Engine light on code is glow plug 2 & 4 but all 4 glow plug are new any idees of other problem it could be

You can get a wiring diagram free at Autozone.com for most cars. You need to register on the site free and then scroll to the bottom of the Web page.

There may be a reference to how the Glowplugs are wired and it is possible that they are wired as pairs from the Timer box. This would mean that 1/2 the Timer box is shorted out or that a Relay that controls just that pair of glowplugs is a bad Relay. If there are 2 Relays for the Glowplugs, just swap them and see if the problem moves to a new pair of cylinders. This would confirm a bad Relay.

You may also have a bad ground. Look to see the wiring for the ground circuit. This would be a good bet if each pair is separately grounded. You could also have a problem with not replacing all 4 as a set. I do not know what VW recommends for this.

Perhaps you should test the Glowplugs. You test them by fixing a battery jumper clamp to the bottom of the casing of the Glowplug avoiding the threads. Then briefly touch the top of the Glowplug with the power cable of the Plus charge. Be careful not to melt the part.

The Glowplug should glow equally between the set. They should not stay dark. And remember, the Timer only has seconds to work. That is all the time the Glowplugs have to vaporize the fuel.

I am curious to know what you find.

These flashes indicate a system error code and will require further diagnosis from a VW diagnostic machine, probably a glow plug has failed.

Where is the glowplug relay or sensor for the 2006 Jetta TDI?The codes come back with glowplug errors on 1,2,3, and 4. We were told it was the glowplug sensor that was setting off the codes. Where is it?

It's a relay, not a sensor. It could also be the harness - although I don't believe a harness problem would cause all four plugs to show bad. Here's everything you ever wanted to know about glow plugs: (with photos). Check out the rest of the site too - these guys def know their TDI"s...

ASL on cannot get into gear, and brake light are out

To get the car out of park you have to put the shifter right in between neutral and drive and as soon as the car starts put it in drive. Keep your foot on the brake obviously. You can go to Reversve once you get the car started and in DRive.
