Transmission clutch my clutch has lost pressure all of a sudden will not let me shift into gear there is oil in the reservoir

The slave cylinder inside the transmission is probably leaking. Try pumping the clutch pedal a few times. sometimes this will let you shift.

My 1999 accord wont shift into gear while its on but will when its off its a 5 speed.


It's your hydraulic clutch system that probably isn't working. When you press the clutch pedal down, it causes the clutch master cylinder to put pressure in the line to the transmission's little "slave cylinder" that operates the clutch inside the transmission bell housing. This disengages the engine from the transmission so you can shift gears. It's probably not putting the slave cylinder to work by hydraulic pressure. The clutch master cylinder is mounted on the firewall, similar to the brake master cylinder, the clutch cylinder has a reservoir and you may need to add brake fluid to it. If it is dry, then you will need the system bled at the slave cylinder by a pro or someone who understands how. Pretty simple, really, just like bleeding brakes. Also the clutch master cylinder can develop internal leaks and this will lead to loss of clutch.

sounds like problem in the transmission shift top if it won't shift gears. If throwout bearing is not engaging pressure plate, it sounds like the pivot for the clutch acctuator is broken

Check your clutch fluid level in the clutch master cylinder's reservoir. If low add brake fluid. If very low or dry, the clutch hydraulic system should be bled to remove air in the line. Bleeding is done down at the clutch slave cylinder on the transaxle.
I would not recommend using a lighter oil. It may cause early wear of the transmission.

It sounds to me like the transmission is starting to fail. As the clutches inside the transmission wear the clutch pack gains additional clearance. Your pressures in the transmission will be higher with cold oil so it has a tendency to build a bit of extra pressure, but it's also slower in flowing through the transmission. This results in a harder hitting first gear. As the transmission warms up, it will reduce the viscosity of the oil and work fine. Cold weather kills automatic transmissions. Let it warm up before driving it or it won't last long. It will require an overhaul soon.

Shifter goes through gears when off, but once started it will not go into gear. why might this be?


This indicates your clutch needs adjustment or the pressure plate is worn out. If the clutch will not disengage with the engine turning the gears inside the trans continue to turn so you can not shift gears. If you are driving you can shift when you rev the engine to match internal gear speed. You can shift with out the clutch up shift and down shift. One thing to look for is the clutch oil reservoir check to see if she has enough oil.

this sounds like the clutch slave is goin out, this unit is on the outside of the transmission. Possibly losing pressure!! Your transmission does not use transmission fluid, but instead gear oil. Have the following checked:
1. Clutch Slave (possibly worn)-this will cause soft or hard clutch pedal feel, slipping clutch, unintended clutch release, hard gear engagement, no/insufficient clutch movement.

*2. Clutch pedal Mounting Plate (possibly cracked)-this will cause improper gear engagement, hard gear engagement, soft pedal feel, insufficient clutch movement.

*this plate is located above the clutch pedal itself, apply pressure on the pedal with one hand while inspecting the plate for fatigue cracks(use a bright flashlight). This is very common on these models. This problem will eventually get worst and most mechanics never figure this out.

Well, there is only one thing I can think of in your situation. Your pressure plates just simply are not creating enough pressure to allow the gears to engage. Either you have a defective clutch and it needs to be replaced, or possibly just needs a ton of adjustment. When you put it in 1st gear while engine is off, then start it and take off that works b/c there is enough pressure to keep the gears from starting to move when not already moving. However when they are already moving, there is just not enough pressure to stop them from turning, not even long enough to shift. Have you tried forcing it into 2,3, or 4 while driving without the clutch? As long as you achieve the correct RPM's your transmission should be able to do so.

Is it a manual transmission (you mention gears)?

Are you sure the brake reservoir is low?

Some manual transmission clutches have fluid reservoirs similar to brake fluid reservoirs. If the clutch fluid gets low, the car will be difficult to shift.

Transmission wont let shift out of gear


i see alot of clutch discs come apart and hang up on the flywheel bolts making shifting hard and somtimes impossable to get into gear if stopped.
