While out of town, my wife called me to tell me that when she came to a stop at a light, the oil pressure dropped to zero. When I returned home, I checked and found that there was plenty of oil, in fact there was too much because she had added another quart. I started the Jeep and when I pressed the gas peddle the oil pressure came up, but dropped when I removed my foot. Whet do you think?

Sounds like you might have a bad oil pressure sending unit, however I previously worked at a chrysler garage, and from 99-01 the jeep 4.0 liter engines were notorious for cracked cylinder heads which allowed the coolant to mix with the engine oil, if your not using any coolant this probably isnt your problem however if you have been adding coolant to you jeep for awhile its bad news because the coolant mixing with your oil has worn out the camshaft bearings causing excessive oil clearances which shows up when your engine is hot and the engine is unable to maintain oil pressure because if the oil clearances being so great.....

Coolant is okay as I have recently replaced the radiator and the level is good since then. How difficult is the sending unit to replace? Shop or self?

The sending unit is easy to replace its on the passenger side of your engine about 5 inches straight back from your oil filter, it screws into the block.....

Try removing the cooling fan and shroud, unbolt the engine mounts and try to jack up the engine until you have clearance.

2001 chrysler town & country oil light is on

If you are taking the car to the garage or a mechanic, mark the oil filter before leaving home to make sure the filter is changed. After the oil has been changed when you return home you can check the filter to see if it was changed because the oil will only be changed. Since some mechanics know an owner of a vehicle will not check. Also, AutoZone have a very good quality oil for the chrysler town and country. Good Luck

It sounds like the oil pressure switch has failed. It is only an on/off switch that trips at about 15 - 17 PSI, the reading displayed on the dash is created by the computer based on the pressure switch being closed and the engine RPM.

If the valve lifters are quiet you most likely have oil pressure even with gauge showing "0".Sounds like the oil pressure switch going bad.I would try that first.

I would check the oil pressure sensor and the oil pump itself. You can take the sensor out and use a mechanical gauge to check the oil pressure. If the oil pressure is within specs, you need a new sensor, if not, you need a new pump.

No Oil Pressure

did you check the synchronizer assy? It is the piece with the cam sensor on top in place of the distributor. These have a tendency of breaking. It also drives the oil pump.
