You need a new mechanic...he obviously has sh*t for brains.

You're engine light is telling you that it's throwing some sort of code (ie. something is wrong, it needs to get fixed). But, the engine light shouldn't come on when you have your brakes done. There are number of reasons as to why you're getting poor gas milage (ie. clogged air filter, low air in the tires, etc. But in this case, it sounds as if one of the brake pads are dragging more on the rotors than they should be.

Now, as for the jerking in acceleration and idling weirdly, it sounds as if your air filter (and mass air flow sensor) needs to be cleaned. My mustang idles high when it needs to be cleaned. As for acceleration, you might want to have your distributor checked (the newer mustangs have coil packs instead). This can cause jerking AND low gas milage.

If you want to save yourself a chunk of change, go to autozone and rent their OBDII scanner, hook it up under the driver's side, and it'll tell you if your car is throwing any codes (you can look the codes up online to see what they mean). If nothing shows up, then your car should be fine. But if something does, then atleast you've narrowed down the factors of the problem.

2004 Chevy Cavalier engine light and trac off light

One year ago---your check engine light came on
The PO405 code was for an EGR Valve issue
No mention--- if you had that fixed

A Few Days Ago---you get Trac Light on,that is part of
the ABS Braking System
Now that system has to be diagnosed & repaired, not just
continue to use the car, actually make the repair, before
you do some damage or can't stop the car & worse things happen

Changing Trans Fluid---is NOT a FIX for anything, but should
be done on all vehicles every 3 years.

If the Engine Management System isn't working correctly, then
your trans won't work as it should either

You need to be proactive & immediately have any abnormal
operation or check light problems, at least diagnosed in a few days
of noticing them

You need to stop using any car that isn't 100% & have it
repaired as soon as possible.

Not wait weeks or years.
Being 9 years old, the trans may also have it's own issues

I just replaced my Alternator and the next day my check engine light came on and went off in about 10 minutes. Now, it is staying on in my 1994 Lexuse GS 300, any ideas???

Hi:
I don't think changing your alternator caused the check engine light to come on, but you need to have your car scanned to see what did trip the check engine light. There are hundreds of reasons for it, and a good thing to try is to go to a local auto parts store, such as Autozone, and have them scan your car's code for free. They will tell you what the code is, and what possibly caused it, if possible. That way you can be better educated as to what needs fixed!

2003 sport trac turned over started...died will not restart.

Could be bad altenator, voltage regulator, or battery. If the check engine light is on, it is most likely a bad sensor. The car will have to be put on scanner to find out exact reason light is on.

Trac off and check engine light for lexus es 300 check engine & trac control off lights & engine stutters while revving in park. Engine seems fine in drive... Reset lights without them returning...

A week ago, on my Lexus ES 300 (2001), "Check Engine" and "Trac Off" lights came on. This coincided with me filling the gas tank to the brim to round the dollar to be paid. I cleaned the gas tank cap and the tank opening. However, both lights persisted. On the same day, when I turned on the car again, there was a hesitance, a stuttering to come on. Both "Check Engine" and "Trac Off" lights were still on.

The next day, the car wouldn't come on at all. It sounded as the battery was dead. I couldn't even jump start the car. So, I got a new battery from Costco ($59) and put it in. It took 15-20 seconds of cranking to get the car started. Once it was started, the engine sounded fine and the RPM normal. The "Check Engine" light was off. However, the "Trac Off" was still on. I cleaned the gas tank cap one more time.

The next morning, when I turned the car on, there was no problems. It came on instantly as it used to be, didn't have any warning lights, and drove smoothly.
