2002 GMC Sierra tailgate linkage - the rod on the right side has detached from the handle. I need to remove the plastic trim bezel to access the detached rod and determine if the plastic "clip" on the rod is broken. Is there a trick to removing the trim bezel without damaging it or the paint?

Take the Black plastic trim around outside handle off and access the linkage to see if they are loose.

I have a 2002 Chevy 3500 and the same thing happened to me. It turns out the latching mechanism on the left side would not release when I pulled on the latch handle. I stuck a small screwdriver in there to release the latch handle (as I pulled on the latch handle) and it popped open. I then squirted some WD-40 on that latch mechanism because it was hung up. I didn't have any problems after that.

My tailgate on my truck wont let down

Open up the tailgate by removing the screws on the inside of the door T15 or T20 torx bit is required. Disconnect the latch mechanism by unsnapping the plastic connectors. You should then be able to manually unlatch it. Hope that helps.

Check to see if you can take out the tailgate handle and see if the unit is still connected to both arms that moves to release the pins are still connected and or broken.

Tail gate on GMC 2002 Sierra stuck closed. Appears to be that right side will not release.

You'll have to get the trim piece that goes around the latch off. It just snaps off. If you push up on the bottom while you're pulling out on it the retainers should disengage. Push down on the top while pulling out should allow you to remove it. If you look in the tailgate under the latch you should see two rods one going left and one going right. They are held on the latch with plastic clips. The clip for the right rod is probably broke and the rod disconnected. Assuming that is the case you can lift up on the latch to release the left side while reaching a finger in under the latch to push the right rod left. This should allow you to open the tailgate. Once it's open you can remove three bolts on the inside of the tailgate and diconnect the left rod allowing you to remove the latch. I was told by a GM parts guy that those clips are only available with the complete latch. I found one at a parts store (Carquest) that I could make work. The GM dealer had a similar clip but I couldn't make it work plus the clip was over $5 wholesale. Hopefully that will work for you.

2000 GMC Sierra tailgate won't unlatch on right

You should be able to pry it off. Be careful, if you break the latches when it pops off you will have to replace it. Look on the opposite side of the tailgate and there should be a plate screwed to the tailgate. It is almost the size of the tailgate.

2003 GMC Sierra 1500 tailgate will not lock shut. never had trouble with it, i opened it tonight, and it will not lock shut. Need info on what could be problem and how to disassemble mechanism to check...

Check to see if the mechanizm is siezed behind the handle that lifts up. this is quite common , also check the latches at the ends of the tailgate to see if they are not stuck in the unlatched position ,If they are retracted and won't come back out this confirms a sticky or siezed Mechanism.. WD 40 or someting simular to free up everything works well. good luck

Tailgate latch will not release

Sounds like you have a bar disconnected inside the hatch. You may also need a latch itself. Does it lock and unlock? If it does, most likely a bar off issue. Will be a pain to get the cover off with the door closed, but you will need to remove it to inspect.

Tailgate 2002 sierra

I had the same problem with my 2003, no adjustment on mine, I resolved the problem by lubricating all the movable parts inside and outside the tailgate, both locks, and the internal linkage, and joints, I loosened things up with WD40, waited a few days and did the final lubrication with white lithium greese. Any other liquid greese will also work fine. dont forget to follow up everyone few month.
