Try to pin down the source of the noise. Festivas are known to wear out wheel bearings (lil tires spin alot).
Check your tranny fluid level too.
Finally, might be a worn CV joint

The first thing you need to check is for water contamination in the gearbox oil, if none try filling it with the correct procedure and reset adaptations, if there is water in the gearbox do not bother repairing it at a huge cost, they seldom get it right. Rather look for a good secondhand box that is the same make, the most common is the ZF6HP19

sounds like a gearbox bearing ,,,this sounds like a growling noise usually when accelerating although as the problem gets worse it can happen constantly ,,, wheel bearings can growl too but will give a constant noise regardless of acceleration ,,, you need to see to this quickly as the more you drive you will cause more damage and cost to you ,,,,bearings will fix it in the early stages but if more damage is done you could have to pay for new gears and shafts which is expensive

If you get the noise by pressing the clutch up and down at standstill (engine running)then its probably thrust bearing but if the noise is only evident when driving then probably gearbox .

Iv a vw golf sdi 2001 ..when i put it in2 reverse the gearbox sounds alot noiser ...like a weening noise what could that b

Hi

there wearing noise is the thrust bearing, it is not unusual for them to make a wearing noise in reverse but if you think this has gotton worse latley then it might need looking at. the part is very cheap to buy however you have to remove the gearbox to have it fitted so labour costs can be high. If you don't need to do it now then you might as well get other work done at the same time to save on labour in the future. so get the clutch checked if you do decide to replace the part. if this part fails then you will not be able to drive the car and it could smash the gearbox internally. Like I say though all cars make this noise when reversing so only payout to get it fixed if you think it is unusually loud

Dan

I have the same problem. I had five new bearings fitted ... one on each wheel and one on the long drive shaft. The noise is now ten times worse so I would guess a faulty "new" bearing being fitted. Ford say that it can only be the final drive bearings in the gearbox now which means an exchange gearbox (not expensive ... around £350 - £400) but add labour and fitting a new clutch while the opportunity is there, I'm giving £700 a nasty look. If I am in neutral with engine running, the noise is not there. If I coast out of gear (with clutch in or out), the noise is there ... can only be the wheel bearings or gearbox driveshaft bearings.

Gearbox fault...message

Hi,
I would suggest it was a sensor fault rather than a serious malfunction.
It could simply be a stuck sensor plunger.

Keep an eye on it though, as sometimes things gradually get worse over time.
If it starts to happen more frequently or you get noticable problems or noise, then I would suggest getting it checked then.
