You may have a mass air flow sensor dirty or bad. It is mounted just past where the air filter goes. It does take a special security hex head screw driver to uninstall. But, mass air flow sensor sounds dirty or bad

You may have a bad coil---take a pair of rubber handle plyers & remove the spark plug wires 1 at a time---when you pull off a plug wire you should notic the truck runs even worse---the one you pull off & it doesnt change the way it runs--that is the cylinder that has the problem

1997 mercury mountaineer skipping and check engine lights blinks then goes off

You have a engine misfire , possible plug wire arcing on the engine somewhere . or a coil breaking down ,or spark plug or plugs . You can go to a auto parts store an have them check for a code, hook up a scan tool. The check engine light is blinking to get your attention, telling you that you have a catalytic converter damaging misfire ! you should not drive it like that. You don't want to spend a thousand dollars for a new catalytic converter. Does it do this on all engine speeds or more under a load , like going up a hill , a steady speed ? If you have it scanned for codes , it will have a P0300 - P0306 For one of the 6 cylinders ! I'm assuming this is a V - 6 engine ! It could just need spark plugs an wires , a tune - up ! Hope this helps you out Farrah ! good luck

Have a p301, p305 codes (misfires) and p401, Engine runs really rough. 120000 and never changed spark plugs. Could a simple tune up fix this. Also replaced the egr back pressure sensor. What else could...

It is most likely an ignition system problem so starting by replacing the spark plugs and wires ia advisable.

If the problem persists then have the ignition module, and coil packs tested.

1997 Mercury mountaineer. 143,000 miles. Running rough with the service engine light on and when driving down the highway it cuts out and the engine light flashes.

Hello Sdhesseltine.

The flashing check engine light is telling you the engine is misfiring and your description of the problem confirms that.
There will be a code stored in the vehicles engine computer that will tell you which cylinder(s) is/are misfiring.
Spark plugs, ignition coil, fuel injectors or internal engine problems will cause this.
If it has been a while since your last tune up it would certainly be a very good place to begin.
The usual tune up stuff, spark plugs, air and fuel filters for the basics.
A fuel filter will not be at fault in this case but is part of a tune up on this model.

If you require further advise, please ask me here in comments, be glad to help.
Thank you for using FixYa.

My 2002 honda accord check engine light has been on for the past month. i took m y car to get the engine codes read and it said cyl 2 and 4 misfired. the car drives good but starts losing power when i go...

Did anyone check the spark plugs and wires? Make sure the Spark plugs are the correct NGK Spark plugs, nothing else. Fuel pressure is another thing that need to be verified under a load, lke the mountain you are having trouble with.

How do you access the spark plugs 2002 mercury mountaineer

IIRC these are a coil over design. meaning the coil is over the plug. the coil should have one 8mm bolt holding it on the lower intake manifold. remove the coild to get to the spark plugs. look by the fuel injectors, coil should be just next to it or very close. coil usually says motorcraft on it and circle in design.

good luck

generally, when the engine is washed, water gets trapped behind the spark unit and stays there, creating a shorting path for spark plug current. best to dis-mount the spark unit (follow plug wires back to source) and dry and clean it thoroughly.
