When i start the engine on my 04 jeep 4.7 liter engine it sputters but clears up and idles good and it runs good no loss of power and no check engine light. it happens when it sits for a priod of time i can shut the key off after starting it and it wont do it until it sets again i changed the spark plugs it has a new fuel filter. i was thinking it might be the injectors?
Re: When i start the engine on my 04 jeep 4.7 liter...
The first thing i would check is the fuel system hook a fuel pressure gauge up to the fuel rail and check the fuel pressure, after you have verified the fuel pressure is good let the gauge sit and monitor how much "bleed down" occurs if the bleed down is out of spec i would bet the fuel pressure regulator is bad or theres a leaking fuel injector causing fuel to drip into 1 or more of the cylinders causing a rich condition at startup.

all engines not tuned up do that. ! no engine size stated !
case in point, bad spark plugs....
ever do a tune up this decade? or ever?
spark parts, filters that? (open oper guide read 60k service and up)
reverse is a very low gear, and as such, a very low engine load
but drive, (1st ) needs more power. to move car faster.
and all spark plugs bad (old) on earth, just hate loads.
loads are when it misfires.
this is taught in school, ASE,
we put a bad spark plug in to the pressure spark tester
and watch it fail under pressure (loads).
same answer for 100 years.
my grandpa;s shop even in 1950 had one on the bench.
to prove to customers (non believers) that your plugs are bad.
we do tuneups now...
there are over 50 causes of misfire.
ill not attempt post them all
but I'll say, we do from 1 to 10 tests, and bingo.
one tests is the simple scan tool
connect it, got P03xx codes (DTC'S) bingo ? 2?
btw bad spark plugs will show up as P0301 up to (04 or 06)
06 be v6
THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR, easy to change and will cause this problem. mounts to intake. If that doesnt work, replace the idle air control solenoid. You can also replace the crank and cam position sensors later if you still have issues,
Check all your fuses make sure their good. Your fuel filter should be changed once a year. Or in worst case it might be your fuel pump. If it was a rough road it might have set off your emergency fuel shut off system. Check your owners manuel to find the lacation and reset button.
loss of power can happen even if exhaust does not flow in other words you have a rstriction in the exhaust usualy the catalytic converter has collapsed any exhaust shop will be able to tell you right away, or when you loose power do you hear a hissing noise ? if so that is clearly a clogged converter replace the catalytic converter
