disconnect all fuel lines, vacuum lines, electrical connections at the fuel tank. disconnect the fuel filler tube, then support the fuel tank as it will be heavy, unbolt the fuel tank straps and lower the fuel tank. clean the top of the tank so no dirt falls into the tank. undo the tank unit lock ring and remove the tank unit(fuel pump assembly).
Check the fuel pressure, to begin with. Even though the pump is working, it may be a weak pump. Low fuel pressure is often the cause of hard starting. If the pressure is good, you will have to start checking the ignition system for a fault.
the fuel pump is in the fuel tank you can drop the tank from the underneath or lift the carpet and see if theres an access panel there will be a lock ring that can be removed with a hammer and flat screw driver then everything slides out. reverse the order to install the new one
I know there is not one on the 96 models. I fought a fuiel pump related
issue on our 96. There are several sensors that must be working before
the fuel pump will run. Start with the crankshaft sensor, then look at
the camshaft sensor, finally there is a relay that actually runs the
fuel pump. The relay should be under the hood with the fuses.
use reset switches on the fuel pump circuit. The only company I know of
that does is Ford and Ford companies like Mazda and Jaguar.
The regulator is in the fuel tank. You must drop the tank to get to the system It is part of the fuel pump/fuel pressure regulator/fuel level sending unit. If just changing the regulator which you can, make sure you install new o-rings, put a little clean gas on them to install. Cheaper than a new fuel pump.
What engine code(s) are you getiing? Try cycling key to, on ,off, on, off, on & leave on. (not start) now count flashes from check engine light. will be flashes, pause ,flashes for 2 digit #'s.
