Question about 2003 Volkswagen Beetle TDI

1 Answer

Monsoon CD stereo deck

Recently purchased a 2003 Beetle with Monsoon system; CD is 6 disc; will run a little while and then stops with CD error; have to unload and reload CDs; change out CDs and begin again; in for warranty and was sent back for repairs; worked a few days and same problem; was told by music shop that is inherent with that CD system and cannot be fixed. Any ideas? Can it be fixed or not. Like the sound, but tired of dealing with the on again off again issue; if need to put in a new CD deck, what is comparable to this system and hook ups. thanks

I have a 2003 Mazda MPV that has the stereo that you could add a cassette deck or MD to...I do not have either, but there is a button for it. I found a guy on the internet that made a chip that plugs into the back of the radio and has a 3.5mm jack on it that will play when you push the cassette/md button on the radio. It is great....sounds just like one that came from the factory.

Your Volkswagen has a known problem with the radio - many people have a similar issue. There is a problem is the antenna base, which corrodes due to weather exposure, and leads to poor/intermittent radio reception. The solution is replacement of the antenna base - a job that can be done by home mechanics (the parts cost under $20), or by a mechanic.

However, the fact that you are also having problems with the CD might hint a larger problems with your stereo system. Have you tried different CDs in the deck? Try with a few different unscratched, store bought CDs (ie, not CD-Rs) and see if you can isolate the problem to the radio.

I have a 2000 beetle with fixing in the boot for cd changer...will any changer do, not sure what i should be looking for! Thanks

Likely have a Monsoon radio system in your 2000 Beetle. The CD changer is controlled by your radio, and not any CD changer will connect to the outlet in your trunk. You can either find a CD changer on eBay (or elsewhere, or swap out your radio for a radio from a newer VW Beetle that has a CD player installed instead of the cassette. Can also find those on eBay.

I have come to find out that in the 90's auto makers started installing factory amplifiers in their cars so they could use low wattage stereos in the dash. It's usually a blue wire off the stereo that runs the amp, maybe it couldve become disconnected? I also know that even if you put in an after market stereo, this wire must be hooked up or you'll get no sound from the speakers. hope this helps.

Wiring after market stereo to factory wiring equipt with factory amp

you have to get the cable that conects your factory deck harness to the aftermarket deck, and that will allow you to use your factory speakers and amp, the wire harness is availiable at canadian tire or any stereo shop
