2001 Mercury Sable Check Engine (EGR)

I have a 2001 Sable V-6 (69,000 miles) with a check engine light and had a friend run a diagnostic on it. It came back with 2 codes PO401 & PO402, which is an EGR flow code. My buddy said he checked and reset the codes and $65 and about 5 hrs. later the check engine light is back on. Any suggestions on this. Should I just go for a new valve ($$$$) or is there a sensor or vacum leak????? If this has a common fix let me know or should I take it back into the shop??? If it is an easy fix I'd like to try it myself!!! I had the same thing. The car felt out of gear and would not go. I took it to Don Davis Auto Group service department. They said I needed a new transmission. They fixed my transmission and charged me $2000. 00. The check engine light still comes on and the car still has the same symptoms as at the beginning. I have taken it back 3 times and they cannnot duplicate it. I drove it straight there when it had a real bad episode. The service manager put it on the computer and 8 codes appeared. I don't know what they were, however. I am still having the same trouble. I feel that I was charged with a transmission when I didnot need one. Any suggestions?

In fixing this code, it is quite common for people to just replace the EGR valve only to have the OBD code return. The EGR valve is not always the culprit.

  • Use a vacuum pump and pull the EGR valve open while monitoring engine RPM's & DPFE voltage. There should be a noticable difference in RPM's with the EGR open
  • Clean out the EGR valve and/or tubing to remove deposits
  • Check the voltage at the DPFE, compare to specified values (refer to a repair manual for your specific model)
  • Replace the DPFE sensor (with a good quality / OEM one)
  • Replace the EGR valve
Hope that helps..........

My 2001 Mercury Sable sputters/shakes and hesitaites a lot when using the defrost, but less action when the heater is on.

your compressor is probably kicking on in the defrost setting and putting a load on the engine. Is it a problem only while idling? If yes, I would recommend a tune up or at least a cleaning of the throttle plate and maybe check the EGR valve and passages. If the engine runs bad at speed, there may be other problems. Do you need instructions?

1989 Mercury Sable GS 3.0L runs rough and idles down and stalls

Sounds like you might have a stuck open EGR valve. Is the check engine light on. I would replace the fuel filter if it hasn't been replaced, also check the air filter.

The Warning Light "Service engine soon" came on. We have a 2001 Mercury Sable. How many miles can the car be driven before dealer inspection?

This light means that the computer in the car has sensed a problem with something on the car. You should take the car to a local auto parts store and have them read the codes from the service engine light. Post the codes they give you here and we can help more. Most likely you wont hurt the car by driving it with that light on. Better to ba safe then sorry thought.

2001 Sable gets P0401 first, then gets P0442 some miles later. When P0442 sets, so does engine check light. Car runs well. What could cause this sequence of error codes?

This could be a small evaporative system leak. Check the gas cap to be installed fully. If fully installed may need replaced.

Mercury sable 2001 duratec engine DOHC I get check engine light and diagnostic code PO401". Any suggestions?

Barring any vacuum leaks, P0401 is indicative of a bad EGR valve. Hope this answers your question. Best of luck.

Engine Lights On...

When you hook up the scanner, make sure the ignition is off. After you plug it in, turn the key to "run" not start the car.
