Pull your door panel off and check to see if the hardware is still attached and not broken.

Sounds like the child lock has been put on, it's to stop children from opening the door. Open the door, look at the door catch, there is a slide switch near the catch, try sliding it the opposite way. compare it's position to the one on the other side.

I have a 1994 ford aerostar. the sliding door will not open. how do you free it up and repair the locking mech

Remove the screws from the inside plastic rim around the windows and the inside panel on the lower portion of the door. There is a square hole in the upper portion of the inside of the door. Reach your hand inside and you can feel a metal rod wrapped in material. This is the actuator rod for the sliding door latch. Grab it and push it backwards. You may need to open the sliding window, stand out side and using your right hand reach through the open window, into the square hole in the door and grab the rod this way. Push back on the rod like crazy. Use vice grips it necessary. Work on this rod until the door opens, kick the door from the inside if necessary (use a friend). Once the door is open replace the door latch, available from Ford for about $35, replace the Torex bolts with 6 x 1.0 x 45 mm metric bolts, 10 mm head. You may need to use a torch to get the original bolts out of the old latch. With a new latch you can open the sliding door by just using your pinky finger.

Good luck.

I recently purchased a used 03 Chevy Venture van. The passenger sliding door doesn't open. It worked for 1 week and stopped. The driver side sliding door has a broken handle so I'm able to open that door...

Pain but fixable. Sounds like the linkage is not connected. Even a mechanic will have to remove the door panel and fight with it. If you can remove the rear seat from the drivers side side door then you might have room to remove the passenger side door panel to fix it. Usually clips are the first thing to break on door handle/latch linkages

I have also broke off my 2001 Nissan Quest sliding door handle on the driver side. Also the sliding door cannot be opened from interior... Any help is appreciated... Thanks

the child lock rod may have been extended...
open the driver side door, and with a skinny finger, push that child lock rod back in towards the rear of the sliding door
use the passenger side as reference
once you pushed it in, you can now open it from the inside handle
