More than likely it is the actuator. this can be found on the transfer case with wires going to it.
the transfer case can be found by following the driveshaft that comes off of the front axel the thing it connects to is the transfer case. they are for the most part just a couple of bolts to remove it and the new one should go right back in and bolt up. hope this helps.

I have a 2004 2500 HD My 4 wheel drive suddenly quit working I put in a new actuator My 4 wheel drive indicator light show I'm in 4 high or 4 low you can hear my transfer case shift but it still won't go...

May be the problem is not in the actuator in the case but in the actuator that engages the hub locks . Check for vacuum line / electrical wires faults . The noise may be from the hub lock or from a cv joint in that side.

I am experiencing grinding in the front differential on my 2003 s10 4x4. It occurs shortly after engaging the 4x4, but only once in awhile. The diff does not make any noise at all when working properly. ...

It's either a vacum shift actuator, Rusty actuator cable, weak spring in side of the differential shift mechanism, TCCM (control module), switch, or vacum switch on transfer case ( start there). But all told, $980.00 in parts and $1200 in labor. Now take a deep breath as you call the tow truck to tow it to the junk yard.

4 wheel drive quit at some time didn't know it...drives fine only rear wheels pulling..could it be electrical ??

I hava a 1999 Grand cherokee loredo V8 with full time 4wheel drive. when the rear tires slip I am hearing a poping noise in the front end when the 4wheel drive engages. I was told by one person that it could be the chain in the transfer case slipping but I was told by a jeep salesman that this year jeep did not have a chain. Could this be the CV joints in the front axels?

Loud knocking sound from front drive axle side

I really doubt that its the spider gears that are bad. Most likely that its the axle shaft- not as bad as it sounds- I sell lots of them.

Grinding noises when 4x4 is engaged

Most likely wheel bearing or cv joint issue. look for a ripped open cv boot. I believe that year used cv joints instead of regular u-joints. Hope I helped. Thanks
