Our 98 Beetle does this too-- only many times. $800 later, it still does it-- if you have a solution email fey_angel@att.net

Sounds like you have a gremlin running around under the hood, just kidding. The check engine light was probably caused by a failing sensor, or it could have been a loss of oil pressure due to the old oil. If the problem never returns then I think it is safe to say it was a loss of oil pressure, but if it is a failing sensor this will occur again. When and if it does happen again do not reset the computer, take the car to an autozone(they diagnose check engine lights for free) if you have one around you. The diagnostic will tell you exactly what sensor has caused this, but if you reset the computer ther is nothing to diagnose. And a dealer or shop can charge 60-90 dollars for the diagnsis. Based on my expirence if it is a sensor it is probably the MAP(Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor) this sensor is probably the only one that will completly shut down the car, most other sensors will fail and your check engine light comes on but the car stays running.

Hope this helps

I have a 1998 vw new beetle. The check engine light came on and not sure why. The car seems to be running fine. Last week we replaced the tensioner pulley and a new belt. Now I have the engine light on....

Some auto parts stores scan check engine lights for free. If you can get the code, and tell me what your engine/trans is in the Beetle, I can help narrow down the cause of the check engine light.

I have a 1998 vw beetle i want to know what does the tcm do in my car

TCM stands for Transmission Control Module.
It is a firmware programed device designed to control the shift points of your VW's automatic transmission. It is also responsible for safeguarding the transmission against abuse or other damaging problems from the operator as well as the engine. For instance, if you were driving down the interstate and accidentally bumped the shifter into reverse. the TCM would "see" that you are traveling at a high rate of speed and reverse was selected but nothing would happen. Or, your engine is misfiring, the TCM may only allow certain gears to be used to avoid you stalling in the road.
When a TCM malfunctions your car may not shift into overdrive, or in worse cases may not shift at all causing you to have to shift the transmission manually.
Most late model automatic cars have a TCM.

Check Engine Light see codes below

P0171 is LEAN and P0303 is misfire number 3 cyl. Its time to stop guessing and pay for a correct diagnosis. Find a shop that works on VW and has the tools to work on it. DO NOT put those Bosch Platinum Spark plugs in that Ottozone tries to sell everybody.

98 VW Beetle Check Engine light

Could be a lot of things, take it to autozone. More than likely they can scan the code for you, they can't tell you exactly what is wrong but they can steer you in the right direction. Give them a call to see if they are able to scan the codes on your VW. Good luck.

My 1999 VW new beetle stalls when it warms up. This has happened 5 times now. There is a temperature light that goes out when engine is warm. If I let the car sit for half hour or so it will start again....

The thermostat on your volkswagon helps the engine keep operating at a predetermined temperature for best fuel economy and engine performance. However, the thermostat mechanism wears down after months of use and subsequently fails. If stuck in the closed position, the thermostat will not allow coolant to circulate, causing the engine to heat up dangerously; if stuck in the open position, the engine will never reach proper operating temperature, causing fuel consumption and poor engine performance. In either case, the thermostat must be replaced. Its fairly cheap

Stalling beetle

Hi
I would get a list of fault codes from the onboard diagnostic system and take it from there. You could either go to a VW dealer, or if you are technically minded you could buy a £15 interface cable, download some free "VAG diagnostic software" - just Google it :-) and with a portable computer you could get the codes yourself. Again and again.

When you have the codes "ask" me. They don't always mean what they seem to mean.

If these suggestions do help you solve the problem, please give my reply a rating to help others judge my knowledge / guessing skills. If they do not, please add a comment with more details so I can try to help you further. Cheers, D
