I have a 1998 Buick Park Avenue Ultra. I get cold air from the heater. One hose to the heater core gets hot, one stays cold. I have already back-flushed the heater core and also disconnected the outflow hose while the motor was running and the heater core is not clogged. Is there a valve somewhere that stops coolant flow? Electronic module seems to be working. After the flush, it heated for about 5 minutes, then turned cold air again.

If one hose is hot and the other is cold it is because the coolant is not circulating through the heater core. There is nothing else that can cause this. (no valves in the system, etc.)

Make sure that the heater core outlet hose (the one that is cold) is not kinked or pinched to prevent proper flow. If this is OK then replace the heater core. I have seen heater cores that look like they are passing water well enough when flushed with a hose but were too resricted to pass the low-pressure water from the water pump.

The outlet hose is not really cold, just not as hot. The air is cold. How difficult is it to diagnose a baffle problem under the dashboard? I noticed that when it does heat the passenger side is warm and the driver side is cold.

The diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) set by the HVAC programmer can be displayed by the "On-board" method.

Press and hold the OFF, AUTO, and RECIRC buttons for one second.
The DTCs will display for two seconds each, and then return to normal operation.

Here is a list of possible DTCs for the HVAC programmer.

Thanks for much for your help! I tried the three-button process and all it did was blink. I tried holding it for 1 sec, 3 sec, and 10 sec. Nothing.

  • Anonymous Dec 07, 2010

If all it displays is several blinking dashes( - - - - ) then there isnothing wrong with your interior vent system. As you can see from the fault code list, if there is a broken hot/cold mix door or a faulty hot/cold mix door motor, fault codes B1340 or B1341 will be present. Recheck the engine cooling system. Make sure it is full and bled properly. You may be getting air pockets. Check the thermostat operation to make sure it is not stuck open or opening too soon.

You just fit a Bypass Pulley. This takes the place of the AC compressor, the belt and routing stay the same.

96 Buick Park Avenue, heater wont blow hot air. How can I tell if it might be the thermostat or the heater core?

Start the car and let it warm up. After it is warmed up open the hood. Look for your top radiator hose, and see if you can squeeze the hose, if the hose is hard to squeeze, the thermastat is stuck shut. If your heater core was out, it would be leaking badly.

The heater blows mostly cool to cold air when the heat is set at 90 degrees. Coolant has been flushed and thermostat replaced

You probably created an air bubble, lock in heater core or the hoses that brings hot water to it when the coolant was replaced, you need to flush the system by loosening the heater hose at the highest point while the engine is running and is up to temperature.

92 buick park avenue won't blow hot air - temp control seems to be working

Make sure there are no leaks and that the system is full to capacity. After the vehicle has warmed up check radiator hoses for temperature differecial also check heater core hoses. A significant difference in temperature may indicate a plugged heater core or thermostat failure

Replace Thermostat in 1998 Buick Park Avenue

this doesnt sound like a thermostat problem, rather a restricted heater core.
The thermostat housing, however, is a cheap cross-your-fingers-fix, and can be located by tracing the upper radiator hose back to the engine. The housing the hose is clamped to is where the thermostat is located. Remove 2 bolts, and replace thermostat.
