Hi Bill 609!

Definitely sound like a rod insert to me. With my practiced ear, I cna tell the difference between a main bearing knock (deeper sound, more of a thudding noise), rod bearing knock (not so deep, gets louder as the engine revs, kind of a rat-tat-tat-tapping noise), and a wrist-pin knock (not quite as loud or deep and gets louder with decelerating RPM).

You can tell which cylinder the knock is on by removing the spark wires to each cylinder one at a time while the engine is still cold enough to knock. (Don't get shocked!)... when you hit the right one, the knock will noticeably quieten or possibly quit altogether!

The 300 Six is a tough old motor and I have seen them survive for years with rod knocks... Just allow the engine ample warm-up time before driving, drive on the conservative side, and keep an eye on oil level and pressure.

An oil and filter change to a higher viscosity oil with a can of STP Oil Treatment (Or something similar) is a good band-aid fix for now, I would recommend Castrol GTX 20/50w... in my opinion, Castrol is the best brand out there, I use it religiously - - - I have a customer with a Chevy Suburban who has followed my advice and adhered to good maintenance discipline that has racked up over 300,000 miles on the original small block and no consumption or engine issues, and is still running strong!

Bill, the temporary fix will work for a while, hopefully a long while --- BUT when it reaches the point that the knock doesn't go away, it is time to park it until the real repair can be done --- otherwise you risk throwing a rod and destroying your engine beyond repair!!!

Please don't hesitate to post a comment or ask if you have further questions. I hope this information answers your question and concerns and wish you well with the Ford. *** And remember to rate my assistance... Your rating is my only compensation for helping you in the free blog!!!***

Thanks!

I have a 1986 isuzu pickup it is a 2.3L 4cyl 5 speed 4x4, whenever it is given higher gas it tends to knock quite loudly, timing belt is fine and all fluids seem to be up where they should be.

the knock is most likely detonation or spontaneous combustion
it comes from incorrect air / fuel ratio, incorrect ignition timing,
incorrect rpm for the throttle setting
It is detrimental to the engine as the increased combustion temperatures will melt piston tops if allowed to persist unfixed
start by running the fault codes to find the problem area
( most likely a heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) in the exhaust manifold not reporting correctly to the ECM which controls the injector settings

Knocking sound when starting up truck after sitting for a while

About the only thing you can try is to change the oil and filter to eliminate gasoline contaminated oil. Try starting it up and if the same noise persists, have a mechanic put a gauge on the oil sensor port to measure oil pressure with a analog gauge.
Excess bearing clearance will result in noise and allow oil to bleed down from the bearing caps. There are a few additives which are suppose to coat the engine parts and the coating is suppose to stay on overnight to prevent "dry" starts.
So if the oil pressure is low, the oil pump may be weak, but if the oil port tests normal, bearing clearance is excessive somewhere and the engine must be disassembled to find the worn part.

Car started knocking really bad got a cylinder 2 misfire code after opening coolant bleed valve with enging hot

Okay, it may be due to overheating, that may be the noise you heard, lets hope. first allow engine to cool, open radiator cap or the resivoir cap, which ever is the fill, remove the bleeder at top hose and fill radiator slowly until coolant comes out bleeder.

note if water pump was replaced due to leaking and engine was overheated at that time then it may be a good idea to replace the thermostat .
after filling is done start engine and allow it to run. watch temperature if temp start to climb past half way shut engine down and let sit for 5min. then restart and check level, in res do not open cap . feel air from fan and see if it is getting hot, this may take up to a half hour but do not drive,

A few questions, does this jeep have an electric fan?
when you heard the knocking was engine temp hot?
If you start jeep cold does engine knock?
Did this jeep get a new thermostat with waterpump job?
did it overheat when pump went bad and why did water pump get replaced?

sorry for all the questions ,just trying to get all the info to help you .

2005 ford explorer had sudden loud knocking and codes P0174, P0300,P0316

Well code 174 is for a lean fuel system on bank two.
Code 300 is for a random miss and code 316 is for a miss on startup.
For some reason you may not be getting enough fuel to the cylinders on bank two, or you could have a major vac leak.

2001 F150 Flareside 4.6L V8 4x4 has 192,000 miles and just started to smoke (light blue) when started after sitting for several hours and only last for about 10 seconds then quits. Any ideas on what might...

Most likely valve guides are worn. When it sits, the oil drains down from the heads, to the valves and cylinders.

If your using oil noticably, you can add piston ring and cylinder wear to that.

You could do a cylinder leak down test. That will help diagnose the issues, to some extent,if done correctly.

BUT--there is NO fix in a bottle for engine wear.
Get ready to send your love one,at least the engine, to a happier place.

Good Morning, 1997 Subi Legacy Outback 2.5 Limited. When i start the car ( in any weather ) a loud knock is going on until the engine is warmed up then the knock stays but you can hardly ear it. I thought...

Piston knocking on the wall of the cylinder . The sound is smaller because as the engine (and especially the piston) is getting warmer it dilates and the gap gets smaller.
If it's that loud then it's time to repair the engine - if you're lucky you will need to fix just one cylinder. More likely you will have to completely overhaul the entire engine or buy a remanufactured one. Hell, if you don't have the money, even a good running one form a junkyard will do.

Loud engine knocking on 2001 Ford Focus

Sounds to me like a very common problem has occured to your neighbor. If this is a SOHC engine, one of the valve seats in the number 4 cylinder has fallen out. I'm sure it has damaged the head and the piston. Stop trying to run it or you might blow a hole in the cylinder wall or break a rod or both.

Ford f150 1986

The firing order for the 4.9 L engine is 1-5-3-6-2-4, with the firing order rotation on the distributor cap going clockwise. For the 5.0 & 7.5 L engines, the order is 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8, and the 5.8 L engine is 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8. On all three of these engines, the distributor cap firing rotation is counterclockwise. Also, on the six cylinder 4.9 L engine, the cylinders are in a "straight six", with #1 cylinder starting in front, and going in order straight back to #6. The eight cylinder engines' cylinders all fire in order also, (standing in front of the vehicle looking back towards the firewall) with #1 being front on your left and going straight back to #4, and then #5 being at front right, going straight back to #8, with the distributor being front and center. Hope this helps you out.
